Environmental Factors Influencing COVID-19 Incidence and Severity

Amanda K. Weaver et al.

Summary: Emerging evidence suggests that environmental factors, such as air pollution, chemical exposures, climate, and the built environment, are linked to the transmission, susceptibility, and severity of SARS-CoV-2 and COVID-19. These factors have long been known to influence viral respiratory infections, and similar associations have been found with COVID-19 outcomes. While there is more limited evidence regarding chemical exposures, environmental factors were found to affect COVID-19 through various mechanisms including increased risk of preexisting conditions, immune system impairment, viral survival and transport, and behaviors that increase viral exposure. However, there are challenges in investigating these relationships due to data and methodological issues. This article evaluates the strength of evidence for environment-COVID-19 relationships and discusses environmental actions that can address both the pandemic and health disparities.

A Highly Potent SARS-CoV-2 Blocking Lectin Protein

Recep E. Ahan et al.

Summary: The global COVID-19 pandemic has had a significant impact, with over 180 million people infected and over five million deaths as of January 2022. SARS-CoV-2 has been identified as the primary cause of the infection, and while the number of vaccinated individuals is increasing, there is a high demand for prophylactic drugs to ensure safe social contact. Drug molecules, including griffithsin (GRFT), have shown effectiveness in preventing hospitalization or ICU admissions. GRFT has been demonstrated to block the entry of SARS-CoV-2 and its variants, Delta and Omicron, into cells, suggesting its potential in preventing the spread of COVID-19.

The striking mimics between COVID-19 and malaria: A review

Emadeldin Hassan E. Konozy et al.

Summary: This article explores the similarities between COVID-19 and malaria infections, particularly focusing on how they may influence each other. Despite the poor health conditions in many sub-Saharan African countries, they have significantly low numbers of COVID-19 cases, attributed to factors such as young population age, warm weather, lack of proper diagnosis, previous malaria infections, and use of antimalarial drugs. Genomic screening analyses have also identified candidate genes that may play a role in both malaria and COVID-19 incidence and severity.

Dalbavancin binds ACE2 to block its interaction with SARS-CoV-2 spike protein and is effective in inhibiting SARS-CoV-2 infection in animal models

Gan Wang et al.

Summary: A potential anti-COVID-19 drug candidate, dalbavancin, was discovered based on virtual screening of an FDA-approved peptide drug library and in vitro and in vivo functional antiviral assays. Dalbavancin was found to directly bind to human ACE2, blocking its interaction with the SARS-CoV-2 spike protein and effectively preventing viral replication in cells. Studies in mouse and rhesus macaque models showed that dalbavancin significantly inhibited viral replication and histopathological injuries caused by SARS-CoV-2 infection, indicating its promising potential as an anti-COVID-19 drug candidate.

Conformational dynamics of SARS-CoV-2 trimeric spike glycoprotein in complex with receptor ACE2 revealed by cryo-EM

Cong Xu et al.

Summary: The recent global health emergency caused by SARS-CoV-2 outbreak is mediated by the interaction between the SARS-CoV-2 trimeric spike glycoprotein and the human ACE2 receptor. The SARS-CoV-2 S trimer is more sensitive to ACE2 receptor compared to SARS-CoV S trimer, potentially contributing to its superior infectivity. Research findings depict the mechanism of ACE2-induced conformational transitions in S trimer structure, aiding in the development of anti-SARS-CoV-2 vaccines and therapeutics.
