Cooling-induced reactivation of distant faults during long-term geothermal energy production in hot sedimentary aquifers

Iman Rahimzadeh Kivi et al.

Summary: The study shows that thermal stresses resulting from water circulation through a doublet in a hot sedimentary aquifer can destabilize faults located far away from the doublet. Additionally, the timing of fault reactivation is mainly controlled by fault permeability, emphasizing the importance of employing appropriate characterization methods.

Review: Induced Seismicity During Geoenergy Development-A Hydromechanical Perspective

Shemin Ge et al.

Summary: This article provides a concise review of the triggering mechanisms of induced earthquakes, focusing on hydro-mechanical processes. Four mechanisms are reviewed: pore-fluid pressure diffusion, poroelastic stress, Coulomb static stress transfer, and aseismic slip. Several outstanding questions are discussed, and conclusions are drawn based on the review.

Coupled Hydromechanical Modeling of Induced Seismicity From CO2 Injection in the Illinois Basin

Keurfon Luu et al.

Summary: This study uses a coupled multiphase fluid flow and geomechanical simulator to model the fluid pressure and stress changes during CO2 injection, and investigates the impact of CO2 injection on faults in crystalline basement rock. The results show that considering poroelastic stress changes is crucial for accurately modeling the seismicity rate.

Analytical Solution to Assess the Induced Seismicity Potential of Faults in Pressurized and Depleted Reservoirs

Summary: The study shows that impermeable faults have a greater potential for induced seismicity than permeable faults under any conditions, and the induced seismicity potential may be overestimated. Non-displaced permeable faults are a safer choice for site selection.

Constraining maximum event magnitude during injection-triggered seismicity

Ziyan Li et al.

Summary: This study emphasizes the importance of understanding the mechanisms controlling fluid injection-triggered seismicity in order to mitigate the impact of earthquakes. By conducting experiments and observations, researchers proposed a new framework to define maximum event magnitudes as a function of pre-existing critical stresses and fluid injection volume.

Unraveling the Causes of the Seismicity Induced by Underground Gas Storage at Castor, Spain

Victor Vilarrasa et al.

Summary: The offshore Castor Underground Gas Storage project was halted after gas injection triggered three M4 earthquakes in the crystalline basement, mechanisms of which remain unknown but possibly related to critically stressed fault and gas buoyancy. Understanding triggering mechanisms is crucial for forecasting induced seismicity in deep underground operations.

Widespread deep seismicity in the Delaware Basin, Texas, is mainly driven by shallow wastewater injection

Guang Zhai et al.

Summary: This study investigates the mechanisms of induced earthquakes in the central United States, finding that deep seismicity is mainly driven by shallow wastewater injection, with regional tectonics influencing the occurrence of induced earthquakes. The results demonstrate that human activities can cause intraplate seismicity by perturbing stresses at hydraulically isolated seismogenic depths.

Storage of Carbon Dioxide in Saline Aquifers: Physicochemical Processes, Key Constraints, and Scale-Up Potential

Philip S. Ringrose et al.

Summary: CO2 storage in saline aquifers presents a realistic means of achieving significant global emissions reductions. Although mature, CCS technology needs rapid scale-up to meet the objectives of the Paris Climate Agreement. Technology developments focusing on cost reduction, safety improvement, and widespread adoption are crucial for the deployment and success of CCS.
