Mass spectrometry for breath analysis

Quantification of Volatile Aldehydes Deriving from In Vitro Lipid Peroxidation in the Breath of Ventilated Patients

Summary: Exhaled pentanal is a promising non-invasive biomarker for lipid peroxidation inducing pathologies, and may be associated with the invasiveness of mechanical ventilation. The most abundant volatile aliphatic aldehydes in oxidizing polyunsaturated fatty acids were pentanal, hexanal, heptanal, and nonanal, while hexanal and octanal were emitted from plastic parts of the breathing circuit. Only pentanal was measurable in the breath of mechanically ventilated surgical patients, with a mean exhaled concentration of 13 +/- 5 ppb.
