Granule formation mechanism, key influencing factors, and resource recycling in aerobic granular sludge (AGS) wastewater treatment: A review

Shuli Liu et al.

Summary: The high-efficiency and economic benefits of aerobic granular sludge (AGS) wastewater treatment have made it increasingly popular among academics and industrial players. AGS process can recycle high value-added biomaterials and remove pollutants from wastewater. This review comprehensively summarizes the effects of key operation parameters on AGS formation and structural stability, discusses the degradable metabolism of pollutants and microbial diversity in AGS wastewater treatment, and proposes recent attempts to produce high value-added biomaterials from AGS. It aims to provide a reference for further research on AGS process and offer a new alternative for wastewater treatment recycling.

Enhancing biological nitrogen and phosphorus removal performance in aerobic granular sludge sequencing batch reactors by activated carbon particles

M. Sarvajith et al.

Summary: The study shows that AC addition can accelerate AGS formation and establishment of BNR, reducing start-up periods. Under different carbon substrate conditions, AC addition helps in granule formation and improves nitrogen and phosphorus removal efficiency in aerobic granular SBRs.

Enhanced methane yield through sludge two-phase anaerobic digestion process with the addition of calcium hypochlorite

Jiawei Hu et al.

Summary: This study investigated the effects of calcium hypochlorite on biomethane generation and found that it inhibits methane production in the acidogenic phase but enhances it in the methanogenic phase. Mechanism analysis showed that this inhibition is relieved in the methanogenic phase and functional microbes are enriched. The Ca(ClO)2-based method shows potential for large-scale applications.

Distribution characteristics of phosphorus-containing substances in a long running aerobic granular sludge-membrane bioreactor with no sludge discharge

Qing Liu et al.

Summary: This study aimed to reveal the distribution characteristics of phosphorus-containing substances in an aerobic granular sludge-membrane bioreactor (AGS-MBR). It was found that inorganic phosphorus (IP) accounted for a relatively high proportion of total phosphorus (TP), while the ratio of monoester and diester phosphate was relatively low in organic phosphorus (OP). The presence of highly releasable and bioavailable phosphorus (NAIP + OP) in AGS suggested its potential as a phosphorus resource for utilization.

Formation and stability of aerobic granular sludge in a sequential batch reactor for the simultaneous removal of organic matter and nutrients from low-strength domestic wastewater

Oucilane I. M. Alves et al.

Summary: Simultaneous removal of organic matter, nitrogen, and phosphorus was successfully achieved via simultaneous nitrification and denitrification (SND) and enhanced biological phosphorus removal processes. The development of aerobic granular sludge allowed for efficient wastewater treatment, resulting in low effluent concentrations of COD, nitrogen, and phosphorus. Pseudomonas and Pseudoxanthomonas played crucial roles in nitrogen and phosphorus removal.

Impact of the substrate composition on enhanced biological phosphorus removal during formation of aerobic granular sludge

Lennert Dockx et al.

Summary: Stable biological phosphorus removal (EBPR) is achieved when VFAs are used as the sole or mixed substrate, leading to the presence of Accumulibacter and anaerobic P-release. In contrast, systems utilizing amino acids and glucose as the sole carbon source exhibit moderate anaerobic dissolved organic carbon uptake, resulting in unstable EBPR.

Partitioning of nutrient removal contribution between granules and flocs in a hybrid granular activated sludge system

Stephany P. Wei et al.

Summary: The study showed that in continuous-flow systems, high-efficiency nutrient removal can be achieved by controlling the solids retention time and selectively providing carbon to granules. There is a partitioning and potential competition/cooperation of key microbial functional groups between large granules and floc/small granules, which can enhance the overall nutrient removal efficiency in the treatment platform.
