Adolescent Parvalbumin Expression in the Left Orbitofrontal Cortex in Female Mice

Yi-Seon Jeon et al.

Summary: The adolescent social experience is crucial for the maturation of the prefrontal cortex in mammalian species, especially for female mice's social behaviors. Postweaning social isolation during late adolescence causes abnormal increase in social approaches and reduces parvalbumin expression in the left orbitofrontal cortex of female mice. The reduced neural activity during social sniffing in isolated female mice suggests the critical role of adolescent social experience in the maturation of PV+ inhibitory circuits in the orbitofrontal cortex.

An Optimized Mouse Brain Atlas for Automated Mapping and Quantification of Neuronal Activity Using iDISCO plus and Light Sheet Fluorescence Microscopy

Johanna Perens et al.

Summary: In recent years, advances in whole-brain immunolabelling and LSFM have led to the development of an optimized digital mouse brain atlas for more accurate and efficient registration of neuronal activity patterns. This atlas has shown to be beneficial in mapping changes in c-Fos expression and evaluating drug effects on whole-brain activity, providing a valuable tool for neuroscience research.

The emerging role of chromatin remodelers in neurodevelopmental disorders: a developmental perspective

Britt Mossink et al.

Summary: This review discusses the important role of chromatin remodelers in neurodevelopment, indicating that gene mutations in NDDs are related to epigenetics, which is an important pathogenic pathway between these disorders. Over time, chromatin remodeling defects can result in impaired brain circuit establishment, especially in glutamatergic neurons, GABAergic neurons, and glia cells.

Enhancement of parvalbumin interneuron-mediated neurotransmission in the retrosplenial cortex of adolescent mice following third trimester-equivalent ethanol exposure

Clark W. Bird et al.

Summary: Prenatal ethanol exposure leads to cognitive deficits in rodents through alterations in interneuron function, particularly in the retrosplenial cortex. Acute and long-term effects of ethanol on GABAergic neurotransmission in neonatal and adolescent mice were studied, revealing potential mechanisms underlying learning and memory deficits seen in ethanol-exposed mice.

Structure and function of axo-axonic inhibition

Casey M. Schneider-Mizell et al.

Summary: This study used electron microscopy and functional imaging to investigate the connectivity of chandelier cells in the mouse visual cortex, finding that synapse number is highly variable across the population and correlated with structural features of target neurons. Biophysical simulations demonstrated the effectiveness of axo-axonic inhibition in controlling excitatory output, especially when excitation and inhibition are co-active. In vivo chandelier cell activity was found to be highly correlated with pupil dilation, suggesting that chandelier cells provide a circuit-wide signal adjusted relative to target neuron properties.

Microcircuit mechanisms for the generation of sharp-wave ripples in the basolateral amygdala: A role for chandelier interneurons

Madhusoothanan B. Perumal et al.

Summary: Synchronized activity and oscillations in neural circuits are associated with learning and memory processes. The oscillations in specific frequency bands in BLA play a role in emotional memory functions. Chandelier interneurons and microcircuits are crucial for the generation of SWs in the basolateral amygdala.

Linking mPFC circuit maturation to the developmental regulation of emotional memory and cognitive flexibility

Cassandra B. Klune et al.

Summary: The medial prefrontal cortex (mPFC) along with its connections with other brain regions plays crucial roles in various behaviors such as memory, cognition, decision making, social interactions, and emotions. Dysfunction in mPFC is associated with psychiatric disorders while the delayed maturation of mPFC may lead to the emergence of complex behaviors and increased vulnerability to disruptions. Mindfulness on mPFC synaptic development and behavioral maturation is crucial to establish an integrated understanding of neural architecture and behavioral repertoires.

Visualizing anatomically registered data with brainrender

Federico Claudi et al.

Summary: The study introduces brainrender, an open-source Python package for interactive visualization of multidimensional datasets registered to brain atlases. This tool facilitates the creation of complex renderings with different data types in the same visualization, accelerating the analysis, interpretation, and dissemination of brain-wide multidimensional data.

Hippocampal Somatostatin Interneurons, Long-Term Synaptic Plasticity and Memory

Eve Honore et al.

Summary: The hippocampal structure contains diverse inhibitory interneurons that provide long-lasting synaptic plasticity and play a crucial role in learning and memory. Dendrite-targeting interneurons expressing the peptide somatostatin (SOM) have unique effects on hippocampal networks. Astrocytes may dynamically regulate inhibition of principal cell dendrites by SOM interneurons, potentially contributing to cognitive impairments in brain disorders like Alzheimer's disease.
