Intriguing H2S Tolerance of the PtRu Alloy for Hydrogen Oxidation Catalysis in PEMFCs: Weakened Pt-S Binding with Slower Adsorption Kinetics

Shaojie Ke et al.

Summary: The quality of hydrogen is crucial for the long lifetime of proton-exchange membrane fuel cell (PEMFC) vehicles, but the presence of trace H2S impurities in hydrogen has a significant impact on their durability and fuel expense. In this study, a robust PtRu alloy catalyst with impressive H2S tolerance was demonstrated as the anode for PEMFC, exhibiting superior anti-poisoning capability compared to the Pt/C anode. The use of PtRu/C as the anode allows for a higher H2S limit in hydrogen, thereby reducing the cost of hydrogen purification.

Climate benefit of a future hydrogen economy

Didier Hauglustaine et al.

Summary: Hydrogen is viewed as an important energy option for the future, but it also has climate implications. Experimental data suggests that a green hydrogen economy can reduce carbon dioxide emissions, while blue hydrogen may result in a climate penalty. Leakage rate and hydrogen production pathways are key factors in achieving clear climate benefits from a large-scale transition to a hydrogen economy.
