Amorphous chromium oxide confined Ni/NiO nanoparticles-assembled nanosheets for highly efficient and stable overall urea splitting

Hanwen Xu et al.

Summary: Amorphous chromium oxide confined Ni/NiO nanoparticles-assembled nanosheets were synthesized through an in-situ confined synthesis method, which showed fast reaction kinetics for urea oxidation reaction (UOR). The confinement effect of the in-situ generated CrOx overlay resulted in ultrafine Ni/NiO nanoparticles and rich interfaces. Both CrOx and metallic Ni promoted the formation of NiOOH species and electron transfer, leading to high intrinsic activity and fast reaction kinetics. The protective effect of the CrOx overlay also ensured robust working stability for UOR. Moreover, the Ni/NiO@CrOx nanosheets served as bifunctional catalysts for overall urea splitting with a low electrolysis cell voltage.

Synthesis of FeCo2O4@Co3O4 nanocomposites and their electrochemical catalytical performaces for energy-saving H2 prodcution

Shanqiang Gao et al.

Summary: In this study, bifunctional catalysts FeCo2O4@Co3O4 with a unique structure combining nanosheets and nanowires were synthesized on nickel foam through a simple hydrothermal + annealing method. These catalysts exhibited excellent catalytic activity for hydrogen production during urea electrooxidation reaction (UOR) and ethanol oxidation reaction (EOR). The FeCo2O4@Co3O4 catalysts required only 1.425 and 1.471 V to achieve a current density of 10 mA/cm2 in the UOR and EOR processes, respectively, which is much lower than the potential for the oxygen evolution reaction (OER). Furthermore, the current density remained stable at a fixed potential during a 20-hour long-term test in the urea solution.

Co Nanoparticles Confined in Mesoporous Mo/N Co-Doped Polyhedral Carbon Frameworks towards High-Efficiency Oxygen Reduction

Tianwei Wang et al.

Summary: We designed and fabricated Co nanoparticles confined in Mo/N co-doped polyhedral carbon frameworks derived from polyoxometalate-encapsulated metal-organic framework. The resulting Co-NP/MNCF showed comparable ORR performance with commercial Pt/C and exhibited excellent ORR stability and methanol tolerance. These appealing performances can be attributed to the porosity regulation and heteroatom doping of the metal-organic framework derived polyhedral carbon frameworks, which promote the exposure of active sites, optimization of electronic structure, and mass transfer of electrolyte/electron/ion.

Amorphous Co-Mn binary oxides loaded on porous carbon nanosheet as bifunctional electrocatalysts for rechargeable zinc-air battery

Linzhe Zhao et al.

Summary: In this study, amorphous Co-Mn binary oxides loaded on porous carbon nanosheets were prepared and their composition, microstructure, and ORR/OER performance with different calcination temperatures were investigated. The amorphous CoMn2Ox supported on carbon nanosheets showed higher ORR/OER bifunctional electrochemical performance in terms of activity and stability. The rechargeable zinc-air battery with the amorphous CoMn(2)Ox on carbon nanosheets as air electrode achieved a peak power density of 89.6 mW cm(-2) and maintained stable operation for about 500 cycles at 10 mA cm-2. The ORR/OER bifunctional performance was closely related to the microstructure, oxidation states of Co/Mn species, and their corresponding proportions. Although there is still room for performance enhancement, this work provides insights into the development of high-performance and cheap ORR/OER bifunctional catalysts for rechargeable metal-air batteries by engineering the crystallinity of the metal oxides.
