Determination of dose derived from building materials and radiological health related effects from the indoor environment of Dessie city, Wollo, Ethiopia

Mekuanint Lemlem Legasu et al.

Summary: In this study, the eight most common construction materials in Dessie City were collected to determine their natural radiation levels and potential effects on humans. The concentrations of radioactive elements were measured using gamma-ray spectrometry, and the results showed that the radioactivity levels and absorbed doses in these materials were lower than the global average. The study also found that the radiation hazard indices and other indicators were below the recommended standards. This research is important for understanding the radioactive changes caused by industrial and other human activities.

Natural Radioactivity and Radiological Hazard Effects from Granite Rocks in the Gabal Qash Amir Area, South Eastern Desert, Egypt

Bahaa M. Emad et al.

Summary: The study found that the activity concentrations of U-238, Th-232, and K-40 in the samples were higher than the worldwide average, mainly due to the secondary alteration of radioactive-bearing minerals in the granite. By estimating the radiological hazard factors, it was found that the radiological risk associated with the studied granite samples was higher, posing health risks to the public.

A unique high natural background radiation area - Dose assessment and perspectives

Masahiro Hosoda et al.

Summary: The study found a unique high natural radiation area in Indonesia where residents are exposed to chronic low dose-rate radiation. Indoor radon concentrations exceeded the reference levels recommended by the World Health Organization, and outdoor radon concentrations were comparable to high indoor levels. The annual effective dose due to external and internal exposures in the study area exceeded the dose limit for radiation workers, suggesting the need for further epidemiological studies on health effects.

Radiological Assessment of Indoor Radon and Thoron Concentrations and Indoor Radon Map of Dwellings in Mashhad, Iran

Mohammademad Adelikhah et al.

Summary: A study in Mashhad, Iran found higher indoor radon concentrations in winter and lower concentrations in summer. Indoor radon maps were generated using three interpolation techniques, with inverse distance weighting proving to be the most suitable method for predicting average radon concentrations. Additionally, radiation health risks from residential exposure to radon and indoor gamma radiation exposure were assessed.

Critical Minerals from Post-Processing Tailing. A Case Study from Bangka Island, Indonesia

Karol Zglinicki et al.

Summary: This study conducted geological and mineralogical examinations on the Indonesian Tin Islands, specifically Bangka, and found that tailings from the processing of cassiterite-bearing sands contain significant concentrations of rare earth elements and other critical metals. The high concentrations of these elements suggest that the tailing dumps could potentially serve as a new source of critical raw materials.

Effects of Chronic Low-Dose Internal Radiation on Immune-Stimulatory Responses in Mice

Abrar Ul Haq Khan et al.

Summary: LDR significantly influenced the proportion, proliferation, activation, and function of immune cells, particularly NK and T cells, but had no noticeable impact on mammary cancer development. The study also demonstrated the modulation of the cross-talk between NKG2D receptor and its ligands by LDR exposure at different time points.

Comprehensive exposure assessments from the viewpoint of health in a unique high natural background radiation area, Mamuju, Indonesia

Eka Djatnika Nugraha et al.

Summary: Mamuju is a unique High Natural Background Radiation Area with an average annual effective dose of 32 mSv. The lifetime cumulative dose calculation suggests that residents could receive as much as 2.2 Sv on average, much higher than atomic bomb survivors. The study results provide new scientific data for understanding health effects related to chronic low-dose-rate radiation exposure and can be used in future epidemiology studies.
