Effects of Ga on the structural, mechanical and electronic properties of ?-Ti-45Nb alloy by experiments and ab initio calculations

Ludovico Andrea Alberta et al.

Summary: This study explores the properties of four novel beta-type (100-x) (Ti-45Nb)-xGa alloys for implant applications. Experimental and theoretical methods were used to investigate the structural, mechanical, and electronic characteristics of the alloys. The results show that the addition of Ga leads to a decrease in lattice parameter, an increase in strength and ductility, and an unaffected bulk modulus. The introduction of Ga-Ti super sp-like bonding orbitals explains the increase in Young's modulus upon Ga addition.

Summary: The TNZT alloy reinforced with TiB2 shows refined microstructure, increased compressive strength (495 MPa), and maintained ductility, making it a promising choice for manufacturing complex components for biomedical applications. Compared to the unreinforced TNZT, the addition of a small fraction of TiB2 results in higher compressive strength and does not sacrifice ductility.

Y. Zhou et al.

Summary: The study found that small-sized beta grains in Ti-20Zr-3Mo-3Sn alloys are favorable for martensitic transformation, exhibiting greater superelasticity. Spherical nanoindentation is capable of characterizing superelasticity and sensitive enough to probe grain size effect in superelastic alloys. Additionally, beta grain size significantly affects indentation hardness and modulus.

Controlling the Young's modulus of a β-type Ti-Nb alloy via strong texturing by LPBF

Stefan Pilz et al.

Summary: In this study, the ss-type Ti-42Nb alloy was processed using laser powder bed fusion (LPBF) with an infrared top hat laser configuration to create a specific crystallographic texture. The microstructure generated had a strong (0 0 1) texture parallel to the building direction and highly elongated grains. This resulted in a significant reduction in Young's modulus and a high yield strength. The findings demonstrate the potential of LPBF with a top hat laser configuration for fabricating patient-specific implants with adapted mechanical properties.

Effect of Nb on microstructure and mechanical properties of Ti-xNb-4Zr-8Sn alloys

Yan Yang et al.

Summary: The Nb content strongly influences the microstructure and mechanical properties of Ti-xNb-4Zr-8Sn alloys. As the Nb content increases, more beta phase occurs in the alloy, leading to a transition from an alpha+beta duplex-phase structure to a single beta phase structure. The Young's modulus initially decreases and then increases when the Nb content exceeds 24 wt%, while the tensile strength decreases with increasing Nb content.
