Urban-rural gradients: how landscape changes drive adaptive evolution of plant competitive traits

Yuya Fukano et al.

Summary: This study examines the effects of competition on plant adaptation by comparing urban and rural habitats. The results show adaptive divergence in competitive traits between urban and rural plant populations. Landscape change is identified as a driving force for the evolution of plant competitive traits.

Effects of surrounding landscape on the performance of Solidago canadensis L. and plant functional diversity on heavily invaded post-agricultural wastelands

Patryk Czortek et al.

Summary: Solidago canadensis L. is a highly invasive species with negative impacts on biodiversity and ecosystem functioning globally. This study investigates the influence of landscape features on the biomass allocation patterns of S. canadensis in human-transformed ecosystems. The results show that river net length positively affects rhizome, stem, and total above ground biomass of S. canadensis, while arable lands promote above ground and flower biomass, and settlements influence flower and leaf biomass. The study highlights the importance of considering the relationships between surrounding landscape, invasive species performance, and plant functional diversity for monitoring, controlling, and predicting invasion progress.

Hypotheses in urban ecology: building a common knowledge base

Sophie Lokatis et al.

Summary: Urban ecology is growing rapidly as a research field and must address the urgent need for sustainability. Synthesizing research and transferring knowledge between different stakeholders is crucial. Through a hypothesis network, we have identified and linked 62 research hypotheses in urban ecology. This network clusters hypotheses into four themes and serves as a first step towards a knowledge base for urban ecology.

The Mediterranean tree Acer monspessulanum invades urban greenspaces in Berlin

Ingo Kowarik

Summary: This study aimed to determine the invasion risks associated with Acer monspessulanum plantings in cities. It was found that the species can naturally regenerate in urban areas, but without causing negative impacts. Therefore, it is considered non-invasive.

A Synthetic Landscape Metric to Evaluate Urban Vegetation Quality: A Case of Fuzhou City in China

Xisheng Hu et al.

Summary: Urban vegetation plays a crucial role in regulating urban climate and improving the urban environment. This study proposes a synthetic vegetation quality index (VQI) to effectively and quickly assess urban vegetation quality and detects its changes over time. The results demonstrate the reliability and applicability of the VQI in evaluating urban vegetation quality and its impact on the urban thermal environment.

The leaf economic and plant size spectra of European forest understory vegetation

Josep Padulles Cubino et al.

Summary: Forest understories across Europe exhibit trait variation driven by macroclimate and soil factors. Some regions have understories with more conservative leaf economics, while others have understories with more acquisitive leaf economics. Canopy cover plays a mediator role in these relationships.
