Phosphorus recovery for circular Economy: Application potential of feasible resources and engineering processes in Europe

Fengyi Zhu et al.

Summary: Phosphorus (P) is an essential and nonrenewable element for the growth of living organisms. This paper provides a comprehensive review of the potential of existing P recycling resources and engineering technologies in Europe. It also examines different engineering approaches for P release enhancement and recovery and evaluates their economic feasibility and environmental benefits. The results show that wastewater treatment plants and industrial processes with sludge ashes as input have promising P recovery efficiency, offering up to 95% recovery.

Phosphorus deficiency leads to the loosening of activated sludge: The role of exopolysaccharides in aggregation

Fan Yang et al.

Summary: This study systematically investigated the impact of phosphorus deficiency on the aggregation and structure of activated sludge. The results showed that phosphorus deficiency led to a decrease in the aggregation capacity and a loose structure of activated sludge, mainly due to reduced hydrophobic interactions. The increase in extracellular polysaccharide content and hydrophilicity also contributed to the reduced hydrophobicity of sludge.

Co-treatment of leachate in municipal wastewater treatment plants: Critical issues and emerging technologies

Recep Kaan Dereli et al.

Summary: Solid waste management has become a global issue with waste generation surpassing population growth. Landfilling, while common, is not environmentally friendly due to greenhouse gas emissions and leachate. Co-treatment of leachate in municipal wastewater treatment plants is a widely used method, but faces sustainability challenges. New technologies are being adopted to address these issues in wastewater treatment.
