Factors Contributing to Self-Medication and Consumption of Non-Prescribed Drugs in Portugal

Aida Isabel Tavares et al.

Summary: The study found that some individuals choose to self-medicate with non-prescribed drugs instead of seeking traditional healthcare, particularly when facing financial constraints or limited access to healthcare facilities. Income and financial resources, as well as health status and needs, are important factors influencing this behavior. Therefore, policy measures should focus on improving access to medical care, addressing individuals' health needs, such as chronic pain, and enhancing health literacy.
