Hole utilization in solar hydrogen production

Mohammad Z. Rahman et al.

Summary: In the photochemical production of hydrogen from water, the rate-determining step is the hole-mediated oxidation reaction. A mismatch between the internal quantum efficiency of photon-induced hole generation and the apparent quantum yield of hydrogen often leads to a poor solar-to-hydrogen efficiency. This article critically assesses the issue of wasted holes and their consequential chemical effects, and outlines various approaches to improve overall efficiency in solar fuel production.

Electronic defects in metal oxide photocatalysts

Ernest Pastor et al.

Summary: Defects play a crucial role in solids and catalytic reactions. Understanding the charged defects and polarons in metal oxides is essential for optimizing materials for solar energy conversion, especially in metal oxide (photo)electrocatalysts. In photocatalysis, defects can stabilize charge separation and mediate rate-limiting catalytic steps.

Insight into the role of reduced graphene oxide in enhancing photocatalytic hydrogen evolution in disordered carbon nitride

Mohammad Z. Rahman et al.

Summary: Compared to crystalline carbon nitride, disordered carbon nitride performs poorly as a hydrogen production photocatalyst. The presence of reduced graphene oxide enhances its photocatalytic activity by suppressing recombination and enabling faster separation of charge carriers. The findings provide a proof-of-concept for overcoming recombination problems in disordered carbon nitride.

Linking in situ charge accumulation to electronic structure in doped SrTiO3 reveals design principles for hydrogen-evolving photocatalysts

Benjamin Moss et al.

Summary: This study reveals the unique properties of La,Rh:SrTiO3 photocatalyst sheets by combining in situ spectroelectrochemical measurements with density functional theory. It demonstrates that the electronic structure reorganization induced by Rh reduction controls the electron lifetime, while La co-doping fixes Rh in the 3+ state to improve the lifetime of photogenerated electrons even at positive potentials. This understanding provides new insights into the design principles for water-splitting devices based on bandgap-engineered metal oxides.
