Palasetty Chandu et al.

Summary: Here, a facile and efficient method for the difluoroalkylation of vinyl cyclopropanes (VCPs) is reported using visible light organophotoredox catalysis. This strategy utilizes alpha-amino alkyl radical-mediated halogen-atom transfer (XAT) reaction. The broad substrate scope, excellent functional group compatibility, operational simplicity, inexpensive CF2 precursors, and high efficiency make this protocol promising for the cost-efficient synthesis of allylic difluoroalkylated derivatives.

Aminals as powerful XAT-reagents: activation of fluorinated alkyl chlorides

Vladislav S. Kostromitin et al.

Summary: Readily available 1,3,5-trimethyl-1,3,5-triazinane acts as an efficient reagent for halogen atom transfer, generating an alpha-aminoalkyl radical under photocatalytic conditions to activate C-Cl bonds of fluorinated alkyl chlorides. The article describes the hydrofluoroalkylation reaction between fluorinated alkyl chlorides and alkenes. The efficiency of the diamino-substituted radical derived from the triazinane is determined by a stereoelectronic effect involving a six-membered cycle that enforces an anti-periplanar arrangement of the radical orbital and lone pairs of adjacent nitrogen atoms.

Photoredox Activation of Inert Alkyl Chlorides for the Reductive Cross-Coupling with Aromatic Alkenes

Jordi Aragon et al.

Summary: This study presents a strategy for activating inert alkyl chlorides through photoredox catalysis and using them as coupling partners with alkenes. The catalytic system involves the activation of Csp(3)-Cl bonds by [Ni(OTf)(Py(2)(Ts)tacn)](OTf) (1(Ni)) and photoredox catalysis by [Ir((NMe2)bpy)(ppy)(2)]PF6 (PCIrNMe2). Experimental and theoretical studies show that the catalytic system can cleave Csp(3)-Cl bonds of alkyl chlorides via an S(N)2 mechanism, leading to the formation of carbon-centered free radicals that react with alkenes to form Csp(3)-Csp(3) bonds.
