Hydration superposition effect and mechanism of steel slag powder and granulated blast furnace slag powder

Jihui Zhao et al.

Summary: In this study, the interaction law of steel slag and granulated blast furnace slag (GBFS) in terms of ion dissolution, hydration heat, hydration products, hydration degree, microstructure, and mechanical properties was revealed. The results showed that the combination of steel slag and GBFS had a significant hydration superposition effect, resulting in higher strength in the paste. The mechanical properties were the best when the steel slag-to-GBFS ratio was 1:1 and 2:3 at 7 days and 28 days, respectively. The microstructure of hydration products consisted of fiber-like and particle-like C-S-H gels, contributing to good hardening properties.

Literature review on policies to mitigate GHG emissions for cement and concrete

Pablo Busch et al.

Summary: This study reviews previous research on cement and concrete decarbonization and analyzes the most common proposed measures along with their level of action, stakeholders involved, barriers to implementation, and policy actions. The primary technical measures identified for decarbonization include improved energy efficiency, fuel switching, carbon capture utilization and storage, and reduction of the clinker-to-cement ratio for cement production, and alternative binders, material and construction efficiency, and CO2 uptake by concrete for concrete production and end-uses. However, there is less clarity about preferred policy solutions and key barriers, indicating a need for further research.

Summary: Belite cements, or BCs, are low heat cements containing belite, alite, and calcium aluminates. The reaction between metakaolin and limestone and its effect in porosity refinement and mechanical properties

Franco Zunino et al.

Summary: In limestone calcined clay cements (LC3), a higher amount of hemicarboaluminate and monocarboaluminate is observed compared to other blended cements, due to the reaction of metakaolin with limestone. The formation of these carboaluminate phases mainly occurs during a third hydration peak, which is influenced by metakaolin content, sulfate addition level, and water to binder ratio. The precipitation of these carboaluminates significantly affects porosity refinement and strength development, while alumina from metakaolin can also contribute to the precipitation of ettringite in the presence of sufficient sulfate.
