Alcohol-induced blackouts among college student drinkers: A multilevel analysis

Veronica L. Richards et al.

Summary: The objective of this study is to identify factors associated with alcohol-induced blackouts (AIBs) beyond estimated blood alcohol concentration (eBAC), including manner of drinking, combined alcohol and other substance use, and physiology. Students (N = 462) were assessed via e-surveys across 6 weekends. The study found that protective behavioral strategies were associated with decreased odds of AIBs, while combining cannabis with alcohol and engaging in certain drinking behaviors, such as playing drinking games and pregaming, were associated with increased risk of AIBs. These findings suggest that behavioral factors can be targeted for prevention of AIBs in college student drinkers.

Transdermal sensor features correlate with ecological momentary assessment drinking reports and predict alcohol-related consequences in young adults' natural settings

Michael A. Russell et al.

Summary: This study investigates the utility of wearable transdermal alcohol concentration (TAC) sensors in studying alcohol misuse among young adults. The results show that TAC features are significantly associated with alcohol-related consequences, highlighting the effectiveness of TAC sensors in obtaining predictive information about drinking risk in natural settings.

A mixed-methods approach to improve the measurement of alcohol-induced blackouts: ABOM-2

Cassandra L. Boness et al.

Summary: This study aimed to improve the assessment of alcohol-induced blackouts among young adults. Through the use of cognitive interviewing, factor analysis, item response theory, and external validation analyses, the researchers developed and validated a new blackout measure (ABOM-2) that can better differentiate between en bloc and fragmentary blackouts and has differential predictive validity.

Use of protective behavioral strategies and blackout experience among mandated college students

Kate B. Carey et al.

Summary: This study examines the relationship between the use of protective behavioral strategies (PBS) and experiencing blackouts. The results show that overall use of PBS is associated with decreased odds of blacking out. However, the association varies depending on the type of PBS being used. Strategies that focus on limiting or slowing consumption are protective against blackouts, while those related to serious harm reduction are not.

Examining the impact of early college experiences on the cumulative number of alcohol-related consequences

Shannon D. Glenn et al.

Summary: This study aimed to estimate the total number of alcohol-related consequences students experience during 4 years of college and examine early college indicators that result in higher rates of consequences. Results showed that students experienced an average of 102 alcohol-related consequences during this period, and parental approval of consequences influenced students' total consequences through their willingness to experience consequences and drinking behaviors.

How much and how fast: Alcohol consumption patterns, drinking-episode affect, and next-day consequences in the daily life of underage heavy drinkers

Ryan W. Carpenter et al.

Summary: Research shows that both the rate and amount of alcohol consumption are associated with affective states and next-morning consequences. Faster consumption is linked to lower negative affect and higher positive affect, as well as an increased likelihood of negative consequences the next morning. Interventions to reduce negative outcomes should focus on controlling not only the amount consumed but also the rate of consumption.

Drinking Motives and Drinking Consequences across Days: Differences and Similarities between Moderate, Binge, and High-Intensity Drinking

Megan E. Patrick et al.

Summary: The study found that on days when participants reported stronger enhancement and social motives, they were more likely to engage in high-intensity (vs. binge) drinking and binge (vs. moderate) drinking, and experience more positive alcohol consequences. On days when participants reported stronger enhancement and coping motives, they experienced more negative alcohol consequences.
