No clinically significant difference in postoperative pain and side effects comparing conventional and enhanced recovery total hip arthroplasty with early mobilization

Jan Reinhard et al.

Summary: This study compares conventional total hip arthroplasty with enhanced recovery total hip arthroplasty in terms of pain scores and opioid consumption. The results show that the enhanced recovery group has higher activity-related pain and opioid consumption, but no significant difference in side effects. Therefore, this study supports the implementation of enhanced recovery after surgery for total hip arthroplasty.

Improved clinical outcomes of outpatient enhanced recovery hip and knee replacements in comparison to standard inpatient procedures: A study of patients who experienced both

Alexandre Hardy et al.

Summary: This study evaluated the impact of combining enhanced recovery after surgery (ERAS) interventions with an outpatient program for total hip/knee arthroplasty (THA/TKA). The results showed that the ERAS-outpatient program reduced complication rates, decreased opioid consumption, accelerated functional recovery, and improved patient satisfaction. This highlights the importance of following ERAS principles when implementing an outpatient THA/TKA program.

Summary: There is no significant difference in mortality and readmission between same-day discharge total hip or knee arthroplasty (TJA) and inpatient TJA, but the overall complication rate is higher for same-day discharge TJA compared to fast-track TJA, and similar to traditional inpatient TJA.

Study protocol for a randomised, patient- and observer-blinded evaluation of P6 acustimulation for the prevention of nausea and vomiting in the postoperative period in patients receiving routine pharmacological prophylaxis (P6NV-Trial)

Benedict Weber et al.

Summary: This study aims to investigate whether intraoperative stimulation of the P6 acupoint provides additional benefit when used in combination with conventional pharmacologic antiemetics. The study will assess various endpoints, such as the incidence and severity of postoperative nausea and vomiting, perioperative quality of life, and side effects of antiemetic medication. It will provide valuable information on the effectiveness of implementing P6 stimulation techniques in anesthesia departments alongside traditional pharmacologic prophylaxis for PONV.

Implementation of falls risk evaluation at one-year after total hip arthroplasty: a cross-sectional study

Tony Adebero et al.

Summary: Research has shown that there is an increased risk of falls after total hip arthroplasty (THA). However, little is known about people's knowledge on falls risk factors and their use of falls prevention strategies after THA. This study aimed to investigate falls knowledge and prevention strategies used after THA, as well as the outcomes of falls risk assessment at 12-months post-surgery. The findings revealed that a significant proportion of participants experienced falls after THA, indicating a need for more comprehensive interventions to reduce risk. Additionally, the majority of participants had limited exposure to falls prevention education and implemented a limited range of prevention strategies.

Summary: The study showed that cementless total hip arthroplasty combined with an enhanced recovery concept can improve functional outcomes and quality of life for patients at 4 weeks and 12 months postoperatively. Patient satisfaction was high, with almost all patients expressing willingness to choose enhanced recovery surgery again.

Summary: This systematic review identified specific interventions that can effectively improve postoperative pain management, including medications and nerve blocks.
