Comparative study on pyrolysis behaviors and chlorine release of pure PVC polymer and commercial PVC plastics

Wang Li et al.

Summary: This study compared the differences in structure, pyrolysis behavior, chlorine release, and migration of PVC-PO and two commercial PVC plastics. The commercial PVC plastics contained more oxygen-containing functional groups and aromatic compounds due to the addition of additives. The thermal weight loss and pyrolysis gas composition also varied between PVC-PO and PVC plastics.

Thermal reduction-desorption of cadmium from contaminated soil by a biomass co-pyrolysis process

Rui Yue et al.

Summary: A biomass co-pyrolysis (BCP) method was proposed for the treatment of Cd-contaminated soil. Through chemical reduction and evaporation of volatile Cd-0, highly efficient removal of Cd from different soil samples was achieved. The remediated soil showed good regreening potential and significant decrease in Cd bioavailability, with >92% removal efficiencies in field soils from four contaminated sites.

Cd and Pb immobilisation with iron oxide/lignin composite and the bacterial community response in soil

Qianjun Liu et al.

Summary: Iron oxide is a natural mineral typically found in iron oxide-organic complexes in soil. A composite material (MGE) composed of iron oxide and lignin was used to remediate Cd and Pb in contaminated soil. The bacterial community diversity index decreased in the MGE group, but there were changes in species composition.

Self-sustaining smoldering as a novel disposal approach for food waste with high moisture content

Zeyang Song et al.

Summary: The study explores the self-sustaining smoldering treatment for the destruction of food waste, focusing on cereal, vegetable, and meat waste. Results show that raw food waste with 40% moisture can be disposed by SSST with over 90% destruction ratio. However, the robustness of SSST is limited by heterogeneous issues, which can be addressed through pre-processing and supplementation of anthracite.

Effect of rice straw biochar on three different levels of Cd-contaminated soils: Cd availability, soil properties, and microbial communities

Meili Xu et al.

Summary: This study found that rice straw biochar has different immobilization mechanisms for cadmium (Cd) in soils with different levels of contamination. Biochar can reduce the soluble fraction of Cd in soils and affect Cd availability by modifying soil properties and microbial community diversity.

Remediation of chromium, zinc, arsenic, lead and antimony contaminated acidic mine soil based on Phanerochaete chrysosporium induced phosphate precipitation

Ni He et al.

Summary: This study proposed a new combination system for the remediation of multiple heavy metal (HM) contaminated acidic mine soil. Experimental data suggested that the combination of hydroxyapatite (HAP) and Phanerochaete chrysosporium (PC) could effectively transform labile HM into stable fractions with increased immobilization efficiency. The secretion of organic acids by PC promoted the dissolution of HAP, and the pH value, available phosphorus (AP) and organic matter (OM) increased in the treated soil. Adsorption and ion exchange also played important roles in the remediation process.

Can ash from smoldering fires increase peatland soil pH?

A. L. Marcotte et al.

Summary: The risk to vegetation and peat decomposition from alkaline ash inputs after peatland wildfire is poorly understood. This study found that ash inputs were insufficient to increase pH of the acidic peatland soil, and a significant amount of ash was required to cause a noticeable pH increase. The study suggests that elevated soil pH from ash input may be transient rather than long term.

Heavy metal fixation of lead-contaminated soil using Morchella mycelium

Yazhou Wang et al.

Summary: This study found that using Morchella mycelium to remediate lead-contaminated soil is more efficient than using hyperaccumulating plants. Mycelium can reduce lead content in plants and increase dry biomass, enhance enzyme activities in soil, and reduce the bioavailability of lead. Additionally, mycelium immobilizes lead by forming salt crystals through extracellular secretions, effectively fixing lead in the soil.

Method of smoldering combustion for refinery oil sludge treatment

Cheng Zhao et al.

Summary: Smoldering combustion has been shown to be feasible for treating refinery oil sludge, leading to odorless residue with reduced volume and no petroleum hydrocarbons. Water and oil can be recovered from the off-gas, with the recovered oil having a higher calorific value for potential reutilization. However, further purification is needed for the noncondensable off-gas containing SO2, NOx, H-2, CO, and H2S. Factors affecting the smoldering performance, such as moisture content, filler to oil sludge ratio, and airflow rate, have been explored in this study.
