Offline Evaluation Matters: Investigation of the Influence of Offline Performance on Real-Time Operation of Electromyography-Based Neural-Machine Interfaces

Robert M. Hinson et al.

Summary: There has been a debate on the most appropriate way to evaluate EMG-based NMIs. This study found a moderate to strong relationship between offline performance and real-time task performance metrics, supporting the use of offline analyses for optimization of NMIs.

Harnessing Machine Learning and Physiological Knowledge for a Novel EMG-Based Neural-Machine Interface

Joseph Berman et al.

Summary: This study aimed to develop a novel EMG-based NMI called N2M2 to decode continuous joint angles by combining machine learning and musculoskeletal modeling. The N2M2 showed more accurate predictions than MLP in all postures and electrode locations. It also had better online task performance than the NARX network. Combining machine learning and musculoskeletal modeling resulted in a more robust joint kinematics decoder than either concept individually.

Using Reinforcement Learning to Estimate Human Joint Moments From Electromyography or Joint Kinematics: An Alternative Solution to Musculoskeletal-Based Biomechanics

Wen Wu et al.

Summary: This study explores the feasibility of reinforcement learning (RL) in assisting joint moment estimation for biomechanical applications, and successfully trained two types of RL agents to estimate joint moments for wrist and metacarpophalangeal joint motion prediction. The results showed good correlation between predicted and measured kinematics, demonstrating the potential of RL as an alternative technique in human biomechanics study and EMG-driven human-machine interfacing applications.
