The Impact of a Liver Transplant Program on the Outcomes of Hepatocellular Carcinoma

Yutaka Endo et al.

Summary: This study evaluated the impact of liver transplantation (LT) programs on the prognosis of hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) patients who underwent liver resection (LR) and noncurative intent treatment. The presence of an LT program was associated with better survival among LR and noncurative intent treatment patients, indicating that LT programs have a positive impact on the prognosis of HCC patients.

Liver resection versus liver transplantation for hepatocellular carcinoma within Milan criteria: a meta-analysis of 18,421 patients

Jin Hean Koh et al.

Summary: Mortality after LR for HCC is nearly 50% higher compared to LT. Survival between LR and LT were similar in uninodular disease. The risk of recurrence after LR is threefold that of LT.

Summary: There have been significant advances in the treatment strategies for hepatocellular carcinoma since the last update in 2018. However, some interventions still lack sufficient data for clinical incorporation, and personalized clinical management requires consideration of multiple parameters.

Outcomes in Elderly Patients Undergoing Liver Transplantation Compared with Liver-Directed Ablative Therapy in Early-Stage Hepatocellular Carcinoma

Laparoscopic surgery versus radiofrequency ablation for the treatment of single hepatocellular carcinoma £3 cm in the elderly: a propensity score matching analysis

Maria Conticchio et al.

Summary: This study compared the effectiveness of LLR and RFA in elderly patients with single HCC smaller than 3 cm. The results showed that despite the longer length of hospital stay and operative time, LLR had a comparable postoperative course and better overall and disease-free survival in patients with HCC located in the anterolateral segments.

Prognostic Factors for 10-Year Survival in Patients With Hepatocellular Cancer Receiving Liver Transplantation

Quirino Lai et al.

Summary: This study aimed to identify risk factors for long-term survival after liver transplantation for hepatocellular cancer (HCC). The results showed that a significant number of patients experienced HCC recurrence after transplantation, but liver transplantation still yields better long-term survival rates compared to other oncologic treatments. The study also found that the era of transplantation affects patients' survival rates, with more recent cases showing improved survival rates.

Summary: The study evaluated the treatment effect of RFA compared to LT and SR for HCC patients within Milan criteria using adjusted RMST. Results showed that the survival benefit of SR over RFA was approximately half that of LT over RFA.
