Biosurfactant Derived from Fenugreek Seeds and Its Impact on Wettability Alteration, Oil Recovery, and Effluent Treatment of a Rock System of Mixed Composition

Alpana Singh et al.

Summary: This study found that saponin derived from fenugreek seed can be effectively used as a natural surfactant in oil recovery, reducing interfacial tension and changing rock wettability. The natural surfactant showed good performance at low concentrations, particularly in sandstone reservoirs. Additionally, the study discovered a promising method for treating effluent produced during oil recovery through gravity segregation and heat treatment.

Adsorption reduction of a gemini surfactant on carbonate rocks using formic acid: Static and dynamic conditions

Shams Kalam et al.

Summary: Surfactant flooding is an effective method to enhance oil recovery, but the loss of surfactant due to adsorption on reservoir rocks hinders its efficiency. This study investigates the use of formic acid to reduce the adsorption of cationic gemini surfactant on carbonate rocks. The results show that the addition of 1% formic acid dramatically reduces the surfactant's adsorption on carbonate rocks. It is believed that the carboxyl group released by the formic acid-rock reaction shields the surfactant from the rock surface, resulting in lower adsorption. This study provides a low-cost option for reducing cationic surfactant adsorption on carbonate rocks.

Low retention surfactant-polymer process for a HTHS carbonate reservoir

Krishna Panthi et al.

Summary: The development of surfactant formulations for high temperature, high salinity, and high hardness reservoirs is challenging. This study aimed to develop a surfactant-polymer process for a high temperature, high salinity reservoir that can be injected with hard brines. Phase behavior experiments and chemical corefloods were conducted to identify stable surfactants, copolymers, and sacrificial chemicals. The chemical floods successfully reduced the residual oil saturation and demonstrated the effectiveness of the surfactant formulation with a preflush of sodium polyacrylate in enhancing oil recovery in high temperature, high salinity carbonate reservoirs with low surfactant retention.

Surfactants employed in conventional and unconventional reservoirs for enhanced oil recovery-A review

Oguntade Tomiwa Isaac et al.

Summary: Chemical enhanced oil recovery (EOR) methods have gained widespread interest due to depleting crude oil reserves and increasing energy demand. Surfactant flooding, which combines various mechanisms, has proven to be effective in improving oil recovery. However, it still faces challenges such as instability under excessive adsorption and harsh reservoir conditions. This review provides an experimental study on surfactant application in conventional and unconventional reservoirs for EOR, discussing the influence of oilfield element variation, types and EOR mechanisms, surfactant adsorption and adsorption mitigation, and surfactant phase behavior.

Wettability alteration and oil recovery by surfactant assisted low salinity water in carbonate rock: The impact of nonionic/anionic surfactants

Maissa Souayeh et al.

Summary: Combining low salinity nonionic and anionic surfactants can effectively alter the wettability of oil-wet calcite under high salinity conditions, resulting in improved oil recovery rates. The selection of the proper surfactant class is crucial for successful oil recovery, as different surfactant combinations can lead to varying levels of oil recovery efficiency.

Wettability Alteration of Carbonate Reservoirs Using ImidazoliumBased Ionic Liquids

Sivabalan Sakthivel

Summary: The study found that ILs have a significant impact on shifting the rock wettability towards water-wet, which is favorable for EOR operations. The dynamic experiments, although with relatively smaller effects compared to static experiments, are more realistic and correlate well with coreflood experiments. The wettability alteration is influenced by a complex interaction of various parameters.
