Species-specific biomass and carbon flux in Sundarbans mangrove forest, Bangladesh: Response to stand and weather variables

Shamim Ahmed et al.

Summary: The study focused on the carbon sequestration and litterfall production potentiality of different mangrove species in the Sundarbans. It found that carbon accumulation rates and litterfall production were significantly influenced by stand variables and weather events. Larger trees and stands with lower density were more effective at carbon sequestration, while Hereteira fomes exhibited the highest litterfall production.

Carbon source characterisation and historical carbon burial in three mangrove ecosystems on the South West coast of India

V Rani et al.

Summary: This study investigated the carbon sequestration potential through sediment burial in three mangrove habitats in Cochin, India. The results showed varying burial rates at different sites, with biological factors such as mangrove biomass, litterfall, and crab density playing a major role in controlling carbon burial rates. Understanding these factors helps in regional climate mitigation efforts and global attempts to increase carbon sequestration potential in tropical mangrove systems.

Biomass and vegetation carbon stock in mangrove forests of the Andaman Islands, India

P. Ragavan et al.

Summary: The study estimated plant biomass in the mangrove forests of the Andaman Islands and found that the highest biomass was in Little Andaman, with Rhizophora apiculata being the largest contributor. The high vegetation carbon stock in the mangrove forests of the Andaman Islands is attributed to high structural complexity, precipitation rate, and fewer anthropogenic disturbances.
