In Search for Comparability: The PECUNIA Reference Unit Costs for Health and Social Care Services in Europe

Summary: Improving the efficiency of mental healthcare service delivery requires valid and comparable data, including unit costs. The PECUNIA project aims to harmonize the international unit cost development and has produced 36 externally validated, standardized reference unit costs for five health and social care services across multiple countries. These unit costs are largely comparable, but some limitations exist due to data-driven divergences in costing parameters. By adopting a uniform methodology and definitions, cross-country comparability can be increased, leading to improved evidence-based policy guidance. The PECUNIA unit costs are freely available and can significantly improve the quality and feasibility of future economic evaluations.

Quantifying the global burden of mental disorders and their economic value

Summary: The study found that in 2019, mental disorders may result in 418 million disability-adjusted life years, more than three times higher than conventional estimates. The economic value associated with this burden is estimated at around USD 5 trillion. At a regional level, the losses could range from 4% to 8% of the gross domestic product.

Global prevalence and burden of depressive and anxiety disorders in 204 countries and territories in 2020 due to the COVID-19 pandemic

Summary: This study aimed to quantify the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic on the prevalence and burden of major depressive disorder and anxiety disorders globally in 2020. The findings showed that the pandemic led to increased prevalence of major depressive disorder and anxiety disorders, with females and younger age groups being more affected. The pandemic has created an increased urgency to strengthen mental health systems in most countries and mitigation strategies are needed to address the burden of these mental disorders.
