Understanding ethnic inequalities in mental healthcare in the UK: A meta-ethnography

Summary: This meta-ethnography study aims to understand the creation and persistence of ethnic inequalities in mental healthcare. The findings reveal that current mental healthcare approaches are perceived as major barriers to person-centered care for ethnic minority groups. The dominance of monocultural, reductionist frameworks and experiences of racist practice contribute to these inequalities. The lack of progress in addressing these issues is attributed to failures in coproduction and inadequate adoption of existing recommendations within services.

Summary: Gypsy, Roma and Traveller (GRT) people within the UK and the Republic of Ireland are underrepresented in research and policies despite high rates of mental illness and suicide. This study shows that despite increased vulnerability, MH services are underutilised by GRT people for cultural and practical reasons. Services need to increase accessibility to reduce current inequality.
