Jinhua Zhu et al.

Summary: In this study, a novel lab-on-a chip surface-enhanced Raman scattering (SERS) biosensing platform was developed for highly sensitive and specific detection of tumor biomarkers. The platform showed excellent analytical performance, including superior reproducibility, specificity, and sensitivity. It was able to simultaneously detect two types of gastric carcinoma-related biomarkers with high sensitivity and specificity and exhibited robust capacity of resisting disturbance in practical samples.

Photocurrent-Polarity-Switching Photoelectrochemical Biosensor for Switching Spatial Distance Electroactive Tags

Ruijin Zeng et al.

Summary: This study presents a photocurrent-polarity-switching-based photoelectrochemical (PEC) biosensing platform for ultrasensitive microRNA-21 (miR-21) detection. Double-shelled Cu-doped ZnS nanocages (NCs)-Au nanoparticles (NPs) were used as photoactive materials to modulate the positional configurations of methylene blue (MB) and ferrocene (Fc) through target-triggered catalytic hairpin assembly (CHA). The distance-controllable strategy effectively improved sensing specificity and sensitivity by eliminating false-positive and false-negative signals. The proposed PEC biosensor demonstrated satisfying photocurrent responses and a low limit of detection (LOD) for miR-21 detection.

An amplifiable ratiometric fluorescent aptasensor for aflatoxin B1 detection based on dendrimer-like DNA nanostructures coupled with catalytic hairpin self-assembly

Luyang Zhao et al.

Summary: A ratiometric fluorescent aptasensor based on dendrimer-like DNA nanostructures and catalytic hairpin self-assembly was constructed for the specific detection of aflatoxin B1 (AFB1) in food. The ratio-signal mode using FCy3/FCy5 showed a wider linear range and higher R2 compared to the single-signal mode for AFB1 detection. The aptasensor with ratio-signal mode also demonstrated higher accuracy than the single-signal-based aptasensor in spiking experiments of peanut, soybean, and wine samples.

SERS Tags for Biomedical Detection and Bioimaging

Huiqiao Liu et al.

Summary: Surface-enhanced Raman scattering (SERS) has become a valuable technique for molecular identification, with high sensitivity, excellent signal specificity, and photobleaching resistance. SERS tags, obtained by attaching organic molecules to plasmonic nanoparticles, show high-performance multiplexing capability for biosensing. In the past decade, SERS tags have made progress in liquid biopsy, bioimaging, and theranostics applications.

Increasing Incidence of Early-Onset Colorectal Cancer

Frank A. Sinicrope

Summary: Early-onset colorectal cancer, which accounts for 10% of cases, is increasing in incidence, particularly in high-income countries. Patients often present with advanced disease in the left colon, and one in six patients has deficient DNA mismatch repair. Screening is recommended to begin at 45 years of age.

Towards translation of surface-enhanced Raman spectroscopy (SERS) to clinical practice: Progress and trends

Sandeep Surendra Panikar et al.

Summary: Efforts have been made to develop stealth SERS substrates to maintain sensing capabilities in clinical samples by reducing background noise and enhancing sensing capability. Two important methods proposed are the use of zwitterionic molecules and nanoshearing force to achieve antifouling features for point-of-care-testing (POCT). Recent developments in SERS show reliable stealth and sensitivity for diagnosis or personalized treatment in complex clinical samples.
