Shape-Dependent CO2 Hydrogenation to Methanol over Cu2O Nanocubes Supported on ZnO

David Kordus et al.

Summary: The surface composition and catalyst structure of Cu/ZnO-based catalysts play a crucial role in the hydrogenation of CO2 to methanol. The study investigates the effect of pre-catalyst shape (cubic vs spherical) on the activity and selectivity of ZnO-supported Cu nanoparticles during methanol synthesis. Experimental techniques and density functional theory calculations were used to understand the changes in morphology and composition of the shaped pre-catalysts, as well as their subsequent transformation and activity/selectivity trends under reaction conditions.

The spatial distribution of cobalt phthalocyanine and copper nanocubes controls the selectivity towards C2 products in tandem electrocatalytic CO2 reduction

Min Wang et al.

Summary: The coupling of CO-generating molecular catalysts with copper electrodes in tandem schemes is a promising strategy to boost the formation of multi-carbon products in the electrocatalytic reduction of CO2. The spatial distribution of the two components in molecular-based tandem systems has not been well explored. This study examines the importance of the relative spatial distribution of Co-phthalocyanine (CoPc) and Cu nanocubes (Cu-cub) on the performance of tandem catalysts. It is found that a direct contact between the CO-generating molecular catalyst and the Cu is crucial for promoting C-C coupling, indicating a surface transport mechanism between the two components of the tandem catalyst.

Alloying as a Strategy to Boost the Stability of Copper Nanocatalysts during the Electrochemical CO2 Reduction Reaction

Valery Okatenko et al.

Summary: Researchers have successfully synthesized CuGa nanoparticles and demonstrated that alloying Cu with Ga greatly improves the stability of the nanocatalysts. In particular, CuGa nanoparticles containing 17% Ga preserved most of their CO2RR activity for at least 20 hours, while Cu nanoparticles of the same size reconstructed and lost their CO2RR activity within 2 hours.

Design of Flame-Made ZnZrOx Catalysts for Sustainable Methanol Synthesis from CO2

Thaylan Pinheiro Araujo et al.

Summary: Mixed zinc-zirconium oxides, ZnZrOx, synthesized using flame spray pyrolysis (FSP) exhibit higher methanol productivity and enhanced performance compared to coprecipitated (CP) catalysts. In-depth characterization and theoretical simulations reveal that FSP maximizes surface area and atomically dispersed Zn2+ sites, leading to improved catalytic activity. The study also demonstrates the working mechanism of the flame-made catalyst and provides valuable insights for the development of cost-effective and earth-abundant catalysts for methanol synthesis.

Chlorine-promoted copper catalysts for CO2 electroreduction into highly reduced products

Tangsheng Zou et al.

Summary: This work develops a gas-phase chlorination strategy to study the effect of chlorine content on copper foils. The study finds that chlorination of copper oxide enhances the formation of highly reduced products, and the efficiency of these products correlates with the surface chlorine content. Experimental and computational studies suggest that metallic copper surfaces with moderate chlorine coverage and oxychloride-like clusters are responsible for the promotional effect.

Tracking heterogeneous structural motifs and the redox behaviour of copper-zinc nanocatalysts for the electrocatalytic CO2 reduction using operando time resolved spectroscopy and machine learning

Martina Ruescher et al.

Summary: Copper-based catalysts are widely used for the electrocatalytic CO2 reduction reaction (CO2RR) to convert CO2 into valuable industrial chemicals. Bimetallic materials, such as ZnO/Cu2O nanocubes, show promising catalytic performance for CO2RR. In this study, operando spectroscopy and data analysis were used to investigate the chemical and structural changes of the catalysts under CO2RR conditions. It was found that the addition of Zn affects the kinetics of subsurface processes, while the Cu surface layer remains unchanged. The presence of Zn stabilizes cationic Cu(i) species and increases the selectivity towards C2+ products, while Zn-rich alloy phases promote the formation of CO and the parasitic hydrogen evolution reaction.
