Bird?s blood and feathers as bioindicators for the oxidative stress induced by metal(loid)s in polymetallic contaminated areas

Tingting Yao et al.

Summary: This study measured the contents of metal(loid)s and oxidative stress biomarkers in feathers and plasma of three bird species in a polymetallic contaminated mining area in China. The results showed positive correlations between the metal(loid) contents and oxidative stress levels. Feathers and plasma can be used as nondestructive bioindicators to monitor oxidative stress induced by metal(loid)s for bird conservation and environmental monitoring.

Ventral feathers contained the highest mercury level in brown booby (Sula leucogaster), a pantropical seabird species

G. P. Bighetti et al.

Summary: Seabird feathers are important matrices for analyzing environmental contaminants. In this study on brown boobies, the concentration of total mercury (THg) was measured in different types of feathers, revealing higher levels in ventral and wing feathers compared to dorsal and tail feathers. Juvenile birds had lower concentrations of THg in all feather types compared to adults. Ventral feathers are suggested as the most suitable biomonitor for THg contamination in brown boobies, but further studies are needed for other tropical seabird species.

Mercury and neurochemical biomarkers in multiple brain regions of five Arctic marine mammals

J. P. Desforges et al.

Summary: The study identified significant differences in mercury concentrations between toothed whales and fur-bearing mammals, with higher concentrations in toothed whales and a higher number of mercury-associated neurochemical biomarker correlations in these species. This suggests that there is variance in mercury accumulation across species and distinct brain regions, potentially leading to sub-clinical changes in neurochemistry.
