Prenatal Exposure to Per- and Polyfluoroalkyl Substances and Child Growth Trajectories in the First Two Years

Yu Gao et al.

Summary: This study investigated the association between prenatal PFAS exposure and early-life growth trajectories. The results showed that higher prenatal PFAS exposure was associated with increased odds of low-rising weight-for-age z-score (WAZ) trajectory and high-rising length-for-age z-score (LAZ) trajectory, while it was associated with decreased odds of low-rising and high-rising weight-for-length z-score (WLZ) trajectories. The associations between PFAS and growth trajectory differed by sex.

Effect of perfluoroalkyl exposure in pregnancy and infancy on intrauterine and childhood growth and anthropometry. Sub study from COPSAC2010 birth cohort

Astrid Sevelsted et al.

Summary: The study found that exposure to PFOS and PFOA during pregnancy and infancy has detrimental effects on fetal and childhood growth. The effects on growth differ based on sex and may be mediated through altered lactosyl-ceramide metabolism.

PFAS Exposure Pathways for Humans and Wildlife: A Synthesis of Current Knowledge and Key Gaps in Understanding

Amila O. De Silva et al.

Summary: The understanding of human and wildlife exposures to PFAS has mainly focused on a few traditional substances, but there is a need for assessment of a wider range of new PFAS. Diet is a major pathway of human exposure to some PFAS, but there is significant variability across populations and compounds. Total fluorine data and information on unidentified organofluorine are essential, and water has been identified as a major exposure source in contaminated communities. As water sources are remediated, other sources of exposure such as dust, personal care products, and indoor environments may become more significant.

Summary: Gestational exposure to PFAS may be associated with BMI trajectories related to adult obesity and cardiometabolic disease, while exposure to PFOS and PFHxS is associated with lower BMI in the first 12 years of life.

PFAS Concentrations and Cardiometabolic Traits in Highly Exposed Children and Adolescents

Cristina Canova et al.

Summary: The study in highly exposed adolescents and children in north-eastern Italy found significant associations between PFAS concentrations and serum lipids, particularly with PFOS and PFNA. Additionally, PFAS showed a negative correlation with BMI but did not have significant associations with blood pressure.

Per- and Polyfluoroalkyl Substances (PFAS): Significance and Considerations within the Regulatory Framework of the USA

Blake Langenbach et al.

Summary: PFAS, deemed as forever chemicals, are an emerging environmental crisis due to their bioaccumulative nature and persistent presence in the environment. The US has implemented the PFAS Action Plan and EPA Council on PFAS to address the issue, but a lack of regulatory framework with federal regulations or standards exists.

Early-Life Exposure to Per- and Poly-Fluorinated Alkyl Substances and Growth, Adiposity, and Puberty in Children: A Systematic Review

Yun Jeong Lee et al.

Summary: Studies have found that prenatal PFAS exposure may impair fetal growth, while postnatal exposure within the first 2 years of life is negatively associated with height and weight. Prenatal PFAS exposure shows no associations with infant weight but has negative associations with adiposity. Evidence for the effects of early-life PFAS exposure on pubertal development or sex hormone levels is limited. While research suggests possible effects of PFAS exposures on early-life growth, adiposity, and puberty, current human evidence is limited, warranting further investigation into their effects on physical development.
