Balancing socioeconomic development with ecological conservation towards rural sustainability: a case study in semiarid rural China

Qirui Li et al.

Summary: The study proposed an integrated framework that combines ecological environment and socio-economic well-being to assess rural sustainability and explore balance and development pathways from the perspective of the human dimension. Through cluster analysis of farm household behaviors and the use of a composite index, the study evaluated rural sustainability at the individual farm household level and investigated the impact of land-use practices on rural sustainability through a structural equation model.

Sub-Saharan Africa's international migration constrains its sustainable development under climate change

Qirui Li et al.

Summary: This article examines the patterns and determinants of international migration in Sub-Saharan Africa (SSA) and its impact on sustainable development. The study finds that international migration mainly occurs within SSA, with migration flows directed towards low-income countries with high population density. Climate extremes have varying effects on migration, with dry extremes promoting migration and wet extremes having a negative impact. Factors driving SSA's international migration include food insecurity, low life expectancy, political instability and violence, high economic growth, unemployment, and urbanization rates. Large-scale international migration and recurrent emigration hinder sustainable development in areas such as political stability, food security, and health, necessitating improved governance and institutions for effective migration management and planning towards the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).

Integrating statistical and agent-based modelling for activity-based ambient air pollution exposure assessment

Meng Lu et al.

Summary: A model combining statistical and agent-based modeling is proposed to assess long-term and large-population exposure to air pollution by treating mobility-related variables as random variables. Probability distributions for these variables are estimated or derived from mobility datasets. An exposure model is implemented on top of the activity model, using hourly air pollution maps for exposure assessment.

Uncovering the socioeconomic facets of human mobility

Hugo Barbosa et al.

Summary: Given the rapid trend of urbanization, understanding how urban infrastructure mediates socioeconomic interactions and economic systems is crucial. Research on global mobility in 100 cities in the US and Brazil reveals two types of relationships between socioeconomic status and mobility, with some cities showing clear connections while others showing little-to-no interdependencies.

High-resolution human mobility data reveal race and wealth disparities in disaster evacuation patterns

Hengfang Deng et al.

Summary: This study used over 30 million anonymized GPS records to investigate relocation patterns during Hurricane Harvey. While evacuation distances were consistent across individuals from different neighborhoods, race and wealth significantly impacted evacuation patterns, with disadvantaged minority populations less likely to evacuate.
