Cardiometabolic effects of DOCA-salt in male C57BL/6J mice are variably dependent on sodium and nonsodium components of diet

Chetan N. Patil et al.

Summary: This study investigates the interaction between environmental factors such as diet composition and sodium content and phenotype development in the DOCA-salt model. The results show that there is an interaction between diet and DOCA-salt treatment, affecting energy balance, fluid and electrolyte homeostasis, renal functions, and blood pressure. Interestingly, some phenotypes such as blood pressure and hydration are also dependent on nonsodium dietary components.

Failure to vasodilate in response to salt loading blunts renal blood flow and causes salt-sensitive hypertension

Jing Wu et al.

Summary: Our study found that mice expressing a dominant-negative mutation of peroxisome proliferator-activated receptor gamma in vascular smooth muscle developed salt-sensitive hypertension during a high salt diet, with impaired vasodilation in systemic and renal vessels occurring before hypertension onset. The impairment of vasodilation after salt loading led to increased peripheral vascular resistance.

The (pro)renin receptor (ATP6ap2) facilitates receptor-mediated endocytosis and lysosomal function in the renal proximal tubule

Marta Figueiredo et al.

Summary: The ATP6ap2 (Pro)renin receptor protein plays a role in proximal tubule function in the kidney, with knockout leading to increased proteinuria and impairment of receptor-mediated endocytosis.KO mice exhibited normal mTOR signaling but showed impairment of lysosomal function, suggesting a broader role for ATP6ap2 beyond the regulation of endocytosis.
