Electronic, Optical, piezoelectric properties and photocatalytic water splitting performance of Two-dimensional group IV-V compounds

Peng Wu et al.

Summary: Using first-principles calculations, we predicted the physical properties and property-guided potential applications of group IV-V compound MX2 (M = Si, Ge, Sn; X = N, P, As) and its Janus structure MXY (X =/ Y), which are isostructural to the synthesized compound SiP2. We demonstrated the stability of 8 out of 18 monolayers in thermodynamics, dynamics, and mechanics, and found that these monolayers are semiconducting with optimal bandgaps ranging from 0.99 to 2.33 eV. The calculated piezoelectric coefficients d11 for the MX2 and MXY monolayers range from 8.0 to 26.9 pm/V. Our results suggest that these 2D materials have potential applications in photocatalytic water splitting due to their suitable band edge positions, excellent solar absorption, moderate exciton binding energies, and fair light conversion rates. These findings may be valuable for the design, synthesis, and applications of group IV-V compounds in future electronic, optoelectronic devices, and hydrogen producing materials.

Construction of Z-scheme heterojunction CoS/CdS@g-C3N4 hollow sphere with spatical charge separation for enhanced photocatalytic hydrogen production

Chengjia Zhang et al.

Summary: By coating 0D CdS QDs and 0D CoS nanoparticles on hollow spherical carbon nitride (HCNS), a distinct double-shell structure is formed, which spatially separates the photoinduced charge to improve electron transfer and reaction kinetics. The CoS/CdS@HCNS exhibits the highest H2 generation activity under visible light irradiation (2866 mu mol.g- 1.h- 1), which is 20.2 and 7.9 times higher than that of HCNS (142 mu mol.g- 1.h- 1) and CdS (363 mu mol.g- 1.h- 1), respectively. Additionally, the 5%-CoS/ CdS@HCNS composite shows high stability after 4 cycles of test, providing a new strategy for exploring and manufacturing 0D/3D photocatalysts for energy and environmental applications.

Confinement Matters: Stabilization of CdS Nanoparticles inside a Postmodified MOF toward Photocatalytic Hydrogen Evolution

Adrija Ghosh et al.

Summary: Insights into developing innovative routes for the stabilization of photogenerated charge-separated states by suppressing charge recombination in photocatalysts is a topic of immense importance. In this study, a metal-organic framework (MOF)-based composite was synthesized, where CdS nanoparticles (NPs) were confined inside the nanosized pores of Zr4+-based MOF-808. The confinement of the CdS NPs inside the MOF pores showed a higher rate of H-2 evolution from water compared to CdS NPs stabilized on the external surface of MOF-808.
