Photoresponsive reversible self-assembly of rod-coil amphiphiles containing spiropyran groups

Nan Ye et al.

Summary: Stimuli-responsive assembly and reversible light-mediated morphological alterations were observed in rod-coil amphiphilic compounds containing spiropyran groups in a solution system with 99% water content. UV irradiation caused the initial assemblies to deform or disassemble, while the removal of UV source led to the gradual recovery of the original nanostructures through the ring-closing reaction process. These compounds can selectively combine with copper ions and emit bright blue fluorescence, enabling the specific visual identification of copper ions in aqueous solutions.

Tuning the donor-acceptor interactions in phase-segregated block molecules

Brigitte A. G. Lamers et al.

Summary: The assembly of highly ordered nanomaterials through charge transfer interactions is achieved in this study, where pyrene and naphthalenediimide functionalized oligodimethylsiloxanes are synthesized and co-assembled in bulk. By tuning the donor-acceptor interactions through connecting pyrene and NDI to the same oligomer or to two separate oligomers, different types of donor-acceptor molecules are obtained. The discreet length of the oligodimethylsiloxane units plays a crucial role in the formation of liquid crystalline materials and CT dimers.

Nanoassemblies formed from amphiphilic pillar[5]arene-rod-coil macromolecules in water for the detection of aliphatic diamines

Jie Lu et al.

Summary: An amphiphilic pillar[5]arene-rod-coil macromolecule H1 has been synthesized and shown to self-assemble into unique nanorings with a lower critical solution temperature effect in aqueous solution. Nanoaggregates of H1 exhibit aggregate-induced emission properties due to electron-rich biphenyl units. Various nanoassemblies can be constructed from H1 by adding small molecules with electron-acceptor units, indicating the influence of charge-transfer interactions and hydrophilic/hydrophobic effects on the morphology of H1 in water. Additionally, H1 has a good ability to form host-guest complexes with aliphatic diamines in water, affecting the process of supramolecular nanoassembly.

Summary: We report that gamma-cyclodextrin (gamma-CD) catalyzes the self-assembly of pyrenebutyrate with Zn2+. The addition of Zn2+ to the host-guest complex of pyrenebutyrate and gamma-CD generates well-defined microflowers with the same composition as the amorphous pyrenebutyrate/Zn2+. This suggests that gamma-CD acts as a catalyst in the self-assembly process.
