Bacterial community structure of electrogenic biofilm developed on modified graphite anode in microbial fuel cell

Bahaa A. Hemdan et al.

Summary: In this study, electrogenic biofilm was created on modified graphite anodes in an air-cathode microbial fuel cell (MFC). The results showed that the PANI-based anode supported the most robust biofilm growth, with high bacterial cell densities of diverse shapes and sizes and broad metabolic functionality.

A Perspective Review on Microbial Fuel Cells in Treatment and Product Recovery from Wastewater

Sumira Malik et al.

Summary: Sustainable microbial fuel cell (MFC) technology has great potential in wastewater treatment, with simultaneous energy and nutrient recovery and reduced environmental pollution. The electrochemical treatment mechanism of MFCs and improvements in their structure, biocatalysts, materials, and removal of contaminants are crucial for practical applications of MFCs. With proper planning and further research, industrialization of MFCs can provide greener fuels and a cleaner environment for mankind.

Equivalent circuits studied by means of electrochemical tests employing different inoculum and simultaneous treatment during bioelectricity production in a single chamber-microbial fuel cell

Victor Hugo Guadarrama-Perez et al.

Summary: Microbial fuel cells (MFC) are a promising technology that can produce electricity and degrade organic matter using wastewater as a substrate. This study compared anaerobic granular sludge (AGS) and stream sediments (SS) as inoculum in single chamber-MFCs. AGS-MFC showed higher power density, current density, and Coulombic efficiency compared to SS-MFC. The electrochemistry impedance spectroscopy analysis revealed that AGS-MFC had lower charge transfer resistance and higher constant phase elements values. The findings suggest that AGS is a better inoculum for MFCs in terms of voltage and power density.

Bioelectricity production using shade macrophytes in constructed wetlands-microbial fuel cells

Oscar Guadarrama-Perez et al.

Summary: The coupling of constructed wetlands to microbial fuel cells is a promising hybrid technology for generating electricity and removing pollutants from wastewater. This study evaluated the bioelectricity production from constructed wetlands-microbial fuel cells using different species of shade macrophytes, and found that Philodendron cordatum was the most efficient in terms of voltage and power density.

Oscar Guadarrama-Perez et al.

Summary: Constructed wetland-microbial fuel cells (CW-MFCs) systems are a sustainable technology that can generate bioelectricity and treat wastewater. This study evaluated the bioelectricity production capacity of Juncus effusus and Philodendron cordatum species in a CW-MFC without external carbon sources. Juncus effusus showed higher bioelectrochemical performance, with sucrose and glucose identified as the primary electron donors.

Oxygen reduction reaction (ORR) electrocatalysts in constructed wetland-microbial fuel cells: Effect of different carbon-based catalyst biocathode during bioelectricity production

Edson Baltazar Estrada-Arriaga et al.

Summary: This study investigated the catalytic activities of oxygen reduction reaction (ORR) in constructed wetland-microbial fuel cells (CW-MFCs) using different carbon-based catalysts, which showed that the catalysts enhanced the electrocatalytic activities of bioelectrodes and increased bioelectricity production. The highest bioelectrochemical performance was achieved with G/TiO2 and C/Pt electrocatalysts, leading to a significant increase in bioelectricity production compared to biocathodes without a catalytic layer.
