The Rayleigh-Benard problem for a fluid with pressure- and temperature-dependent material properties

Lorenzo Fusi et al.

Summary: The Rayleigh-Benard problem is extensively studied in fluid mechanics. However, most existing literature focuses on fluids with constant material properties or variable viscosity and/or thermal conduction, neglecting the more realistic case with all material properties variable. This paper re-examines the onset of thermal convection for fluids with pressure and temperature-dependent material properties by investigating the linear stability of the conduction solution.

Viscous heating and instability of the adiabatic buoyant flows in a horizontal channel

A. Barletta et al.

Summary: The stability of buoyant flows in a viscous fluid in a horizontal plane-parallel channel with adiabatic walls is investigated. The basic flow exhibits a parallel velocity field under stationary state conditions. The duality of flows, caused by the combined actions of viscous dissipation and buoyancy force, is analyzed for different mass flow rates. The stability analysis focuses on the primary branch of the dual solutions compatible with the Oberbeck-Boussinesq approximation.

Predicting the effect of inertia, rotation, and magnetic field on the onset of convection in a bidispersive porous medium using machine learning techniques

Mahesh Singh et al.

Summary: This paper analyzes the effects of the magnetic field and inertia on the onset of thermal convection in a horizontally rotating bidispersive porous layer. The Darcy equation is used to characterize the fluid motion with the same temperature in the micro- and macrophases. The eigenvalue problem obtained from linear stability analysis is solved analytically for free-free boundaries. Furthermore, machine learning techniques are introduced to examine the effect of multiple parameters on the system's marginal state.

On the Use and Misuse of the Oberbeck-Boussinesq Approximation

Antonio Barletta et al.

Summary: The Oberbeck-Boussinesq approximation is commonly used for studying natural or mixed convection flows. However, misunderstandings of this approximation can lead to paradoxes or incorrect conclusions. This paper briefly reviews the basic features of the Oberbeck-Boussinesq approximation and provides three simple examples where it can be misused. These misuses result in erroneous conclusions and violations of mass conservation. The paper also discusses the Oberbeck-Boussinesq approximation as an asymptotic theory obtained by letting the product of the thermal expansion coefficient and the reference temperature difference tend to zero.

Energy stability of plane Couette and Poiseuille flows: A conjecture

Paolo Falsaperla et al.

Summary: In this study, the nonlinear stability of plane Couette and Poiseuille flows is investigated using the Lyapunov second method and classical L-2 energy. It is proved that the streamwise perturbations are L-2 energy stable regardless of the Reynolds number, contradicting previous research. The results suggest that the critical nonlinear Reynolds numbers are obtained from two-dimensional perturbations as theorized by Orr (1907).

The Boussinesq approximation for buoyant flows

Antonio Barletta

Summary: The aim of this paper is to present a simplified and rigorous deduction of the Boussinesq approximated governing equations for buoyant flows, along with the discussion of a simplified version of the manifold asymptotic analyses. The analysis focuses on the local balance equations applicable to general fluid, and demonstrates the leading order terms in the governing equations for the asymptotic limit. The role of viscous dissipation is also taken into account.
