A mixed-order interpolation solid element for efficient arterial wall simulations

L. A. Mansilla Alvarez et al.

Summary: A numerical strategy is presented for modeling the mechanical equilibrium in vascular vessels. This strategy utilizes the shell-like structure of the vessel wall by proposing a mixed-order approximation of the displacement field. The effectiveness of this approach is validated through numerical examples, showing its versatility and efficiency in simulating the mechanics of vascular vessels.

A finite strain model for multi-material, multi-component biomechanical analysis with total Lagrangian smoothed finite element method

Shao-Wei Wu et al.

Summary: This paper presents a Unified-Implementation of smoothed finite element method (UI-SFEM) for analyzing large deformations of complex biological tissues. The method utilizes automatically generated linear triangles and tetrahedrons to construct the numerical integration domain, and can combine arbitrary forms of smoothing domains based on the numerical characteristics of materials or components. It also considers the instantaneous hyperelasticity and time-dependent viscous behaviors commonly observed in biological tissues. Numerical experiments demonstrate that the UI-SFEM possesses high flexibility, accuracy, computational efficiency, and is insensitive to mesh distortion when simulating multi-material and multi-component biological tissues.

A review of the efforts to develop muscle and musculoskeletal models for biomechanics in the last 50 years

James M. Wakeling et al.

Summary: Both the Hill and Huxley muscle models were described before the founding of the International Society of Biomechanics 50 years ago, but were not widely used until the 1970s due to the lack of computing. With the availability of computers, musculoskeletal modeling developed and Hill type muscle models were chosen for their computational simplicity. However, recent validation studies have shown that these models are less accurate for certain natural in vivo locomotor behaviors, indicating the need for improvement.

Role of anisotropic invariants in numerically modeling soft biological tissues as transversely isotropic hyperelastic materials: A comparative study

Carlos Castillo-Mendez et al.

Summary: This study examines the impact of using different strain invariants in numerical modeling of soft tissues, proposes model adjustments accordingly, and validates them with experimental data. The main difference lies in the models' description of shear behaviors, with the proposed model predicting more diverse shear responses.

Geometrically nonlinear modelling of pre-stressed viscoelastic fibre-reinforced composites with application to arteries

I. I. Tagiltsev et al.

Summary: The mechanical behavior of pre-stressed fiber-reinforced composites is modeled in a geometrically exact setting using a general approach that includes a viscoelastic material model and a transformation rule for initial conditions. A locking effect is discovered where the composite's opening angle is smaller than that of its individual layers in some cases, highlighting the limitation of standard cutting tests and the need for more refined experimental techniques to analyze pre-stresses.

Mesh distortion insensitive and locking-free Petrov-Galerkin low-order EAS elements for linear elasticity

Robin Pfefferkorn et al.

Summary: The enhanced assumed strain (EAS) method developed by Simo and Rifai in 1990 is a successful mixed finite element method in solid mechanics. However, it has a drawback of being highly mesh dependent. A novel Petrov-Galerkin approach proposed in this work aims to overcome the mesh-distortion sensitivity of EAS elements without losing other advantages. The method can achieve high accuracy in bending problems and allows relaxation of high quality demands on mesh topology.
