Organic matter transformation ratio, hydrocarbon expulsion efficiency and shale oil enrichment type in Chang 73 shale of Upper Triassic Yanchang Formation in Ordos Basin, NW China

Wenzhi Zhao et al.

Summary: This paper analyzes the organic matter transformation ratio, hydrocarbon expulsion efficiency, and roof/floor sealing conditions of the Chang 7(3) shale in the Yanchang Formation, evaluating its major enrichment type of shale oil. The results show that more than 50% of the organic matters in the shale have not transformed into hydrocarbons, and the lower the maturity, the greater the proportion of untransformed organic matters. The shale exhibits poor roof/floor sealing conditions and low-medium mature shale oil is believed to be the major enrichment type, with potential for shale oil enrichment in areas with good sealing conditions and without faults. Relevant in-situ conversion technologies and resource availability and distribution should be further studied.

Differences and origins of hydrocarbon generation characteristics between mudstone and shale in the Seventh Member of the Yanchang Formation, Ordos Basin, China

Ruihui Zheng et al.

Summary: This paper investigates the differences between organic-rich black shale and dark-grey mudstone in the Seventh Member of the Yanchang Formation in the Ordos Basin. It reveals that black shale has higher total organic carbon content and higher activation energy for hydrocarbon generation, resulting in a fast conversion rate and short cycle. On the other hand, dark-grey mudstone has lower total organic carbon content and lower activation energy, leading to a slower conversion rate and longer cycle. These differences are mainly influenced by the composition of macerals and the source of organic matter.

Authigenic silica in continental lacustrine shale and its hydrocarbon significance

Bin Bai et al.

Summary: This study investigates the characteristics and origins of different types of silica in lake basin shales from two basins in China. The origins of silica include felsic mineral dissolution, tuffite devitrification, clay mineral transformation, and siliceous mineral metasomatism. The different origins of silica have varying geological characteristics and occurrence states, which can affect the storage performance, seepage capacity, and fracturing effect of continental shale.

Heterogeneous geological conditions and differential enrichment of medium and high maturity continental shale oil in China

Hu Suyun et al.

Summary: Based on the comparison, it has been confirmed that the medium-high maturity shale oil plays in China have heterogeneity in source and reservoir conditions and differential enrichment. This includes differences in geological conditions, heterogeneity in source and reservoirs, and the control of source rocks on hydrocarbon generation and expulsion.

Several issues worthy of attention in current lacustrine shale oil exploration and development

Jin Zhijun et al.

Summary: The article compared the geological and engineering characteristics of shale oil reservoirs between China and the United States, and proposed 8 issues worthy of attention in the exploration and development of lacustrine shale oil in China. In the future, further research is needed on key scientific issues such as terrestrial fine-grained sediment deposition processes, diagenesis-hydrocarbon generation mechanisms, and shale layer fracturing mechanisms.
