Chemical remediation and advanced oxidation process of polychlorinated biphenyls in contaminated soils: a review

Muhammad Zaffar Hashmi et al.

Summary: This review paper discusses the recent development in photocatalytic and chemical techniques for the remediation of PCBs in contaminated soils. Advanced oxidation is found to be an efficient remediation technique with high removal efficiency of PCBs. Persulfate oxidation is identified as a suitable technique that can work under normal environmental conditions. Factors such as pH, temperature, and the use of surfactants and organic solvents affect the effectiveness of these techniques.

Sorption of cefdinir, memantine, praziquantel and trimethoprim in sediment and soil samples

Dragana Mutavdzic Pavlovic et al.

Summary: The widespread use of pharmaceuticals leads to increasing presence of them in the environment. This study investigated the behavior of four different drugs in soil and sediment, finding that cefdinir had the highest sorption affinity, while memantine and praziquantel tended to be present in water. pH and ionic strength had effects on the sorption of drugs.

Desorption of pharmaceuticals and illicit drugs from different stabilized sludge types across pH

Roman Grabic et al.

Summary: This study investigates the risks of pharmaceutical and illicit drug residues in sewage sludge when directly applied to agricultural soils. The leaching/desorption of these residues were tested under different pH conditions, and the results showed that the behavior of the residues varied depending on the sludge type and pH. The study suggests that high pH can increase the desorption of these residues, especially in anaerobically stabilized sludges.

Hydroxyl radicals can significantly influence the toxicity of ofloxacin transformation products during ozonation

Yide He et al.

Summary: Ozonation is commonly used to remove recalcitrant contaminants in water, but the toxicity of transformation products (TPs) generated from ozone and hydroxyl radicals (center dot OH) reactions has not been well studied. This research investigated the degradation of the antibiotic OFX under different Rct values (the exposure ratio of center dot OH to O3) and found that TPs formed at high-Rct conditions were less toxic. The study suggests that center dot OH may be more efficient in eliminating the toxicity of OFX than ozone.

A detailed review on advanced oxidation process in treatment of wastewater: Mechanism, challenges and future outlook

A. Saravanan et al.

Summary: The presence of contaminants in waterbodies poses significant risks to mankind and wildlife. Developing an effective, feasible, cost-effective, and eco-friendly approach for treating wastewater is crucial for reducing environmental pollution. Advanced oxidation process is an efficient technique that can be used for wastewater treatment, offering advantages such as high oxidation efficacy and minimal production of secondary pollutants. This review focuses on the application of advanced oxidation process, discussing the mechanisms involved and the challenges faced during wastewater treatment using various methods.

Screening of pharmaceuticals in coastal waters of the southern coast of Viti Levu in Fiji, South Pacific

Jasha Dehm et al.

Summary: The global reliance on pharmaceuticals and lack of effective treatment methods has led to a pseudo-persistence of pharmaceuticals in the environment. This study in Fiji's southern coastal waters found measurable concentrations of pharmaceutical residues, indicating that these pollutants are not limited to highly populated areas.

Aqueous stability and degradation of psychiatric and neuroactive compounds and its biological activity in Daphnia magna

Marina Bellot et al.

Summary: The study evaluated the stability of 17 neuroactive compounds in water and found that most compounds did not degrade, except for apomorphine and 6-hydroxydopamine which degraded completely within 24 hours. Most compounds altered motile responses to light in the crustacean Daphnia magna.
