Density variation-based background filtering algorithm for low-channel roadside lidar data

Ciyun Lin et al.

Summary: In this paper, a novel background filtering algorithm based on density variation for low-channel roadside LiDAR is proposed. The detected area is segmented into small cubes, and the density variation of the point cloud in continuous time is calculated to analyze the characteristics of LiDAR points. A distinction index is constructed to identify the road user passing area, and outliers are removed through the DBSCAN algorithm. LiDAR points that are not in the passing area are excluded. Experimental results show that the proposed algorithm has higher filtering accuracy and can perform well in real-time in complex sites, with the best stability as distance increases.
