Dietary Supplementation with a Blend of Hydrolyzable and Condensed Tannins Ameliorates Diet-Induced Intestinal Inflammation in Zebrafish (Danio rerio)

Roberta Imperatore et al.

Summary: The large-scale fish farming industry requires a significant amount of animal-based feed, leading to the depletion of aquatic species. The development of alternative plant-based feed is hindered by its inflammatory effects on fish. This study used zebrafish as a model to investigate the potential of tannins to alleviate intestinal inflammation caused by a plant-based diet.

Commensal cow Roseburia reduces gut-dysbiosis-induced mastitis through inhibiting bacterial translocation by producing butyrate in mice

Caijun Zhao et al.

Summary: This study found that cows with mastitis had significant gut dysbiosis, characterized by enrichment of opportunistic pathogenic bacteria and depletion of commensal bacteria. Fecal microbiota transplantation from cows with mastitis to mice induced mastitis and altered gut and mammary microbiota in mice. The commensal bacteria improved mastitis symptoms by producing butyrate, limiting bacterial translocation.

Colonocyte-derived lactate promotes E. coli fitness in the context of inflammation-associated gut microbiota dysbiosis

Savannah J. Taylor et al.

Summary: This study investigated the metabolism of lactate in the gut during intestinal inflammation and its impact on microbial and host physiology. The researchers found that lactate levels in the gut lumen increased during inflammation-associated dysbiosis. Mice lacking the lactate dehydrogenase A subunit in intestinal epithelial cells showed reduced lactate availability, while commensal E. coli and pathogenic Salmonella utilized lactate to increase fitness. Additionally, these mice exhibited lower levels of inflammation in a model of noninfectious colitis. The release of lactate by intestinal epithelial cells during gut inflammation affects the metabolism of gut-associated microbial communities, perpetuating disturbances in microbiota composition.

Alteration of Skin Microbiome in CKD Patients Is Associated With Pruritus and Renal Function

Yu Tian et al.

Summary: The dysbiotic gut microbiome in CKD patients has been extensively studied, but the role of the skin microbiome in CKD and its association with pruritus has not been investigated. This study examined the bacterial profile of the skin microbiome in CKD patients and its correlation with pruritus. The results showed a significant difference in bacterial composition between CKD patients and healthy controls. CKD patients had a depletion of bacterial diversity compared to healthy controls. Furthermore, CKD patients with pruritus showed a different bacterial community compared to those without pruritus and healthy controls. Escherichia-Shigella was identified as a potential diagnostic biomarker for CKD. This study sheds light on the dysbiotic skin microbiome in CKD patients and its association with pruritus and renal function.

PI3KC3 complex subunit NRBF2 is required for apoptotic cell clearance to restrict intestinal inflammation

Ming-Yue Wu et al.

Summary: NRBF2, a regulatory subunit of the ATG14-BECN1/Beclin 1-PIK3C3/VPS34 complex, plays a crucial role in clearing apoptotic cells and alleviating colitis by promoting the fusion of phagosomes and lysosomes through the generation of active RAB7. Increased NRBF2 expression in colon macrophages is associated with a protective role in ulcerative colitis, highlighting the importance of apoptotic cell clearance in maintaining intestinal homeostasis and reducing inflammation.

An improved method for the separation of carotenoids and carotenoid isomers by liquid chromatography-mass spectrometry

Shuang Li et al.

Summary: Carotenoids are complex compounds composed of highly conjugated isoprene units that are difficult to identify and quantify due to their extreme hydrophobicity. A new method using a C18 column and isopropanol as eluent successfully separated 23 carotenoid standards and differentiated three groups of isomeric carotenoids. The methodology showed improved compatibility with different categories of carotenoids and the ability to resolve isomeric carotenes, crucial for both assessing carotenoid species and tracing their metabolic pathways.

Evaluation of Acute Reactions on Mouse Skin Irradiated with 222 and 235 nm UV-C

Nozomi Yamano et al.

Summary: This study evaluated the biological response and DNA damage following irradiation with shorter wavelengths in the UV-C range, finding that short UV-C wavelengths can lead to edema and scale formation. The determination of MPRD values at 207, 222, and 235 nm provided important thresholds and indicators for safety assessments of short UV-C. The study suggests that current human exposure limits for short UV-C wavelengths below 254 nm may be overly restrictive and should be reconsidered for future disinfection lamps.
