On the Estimation of Deep Atlantic Ventilation from Fossil Radiocarbon Records. Part II: (In)consistency with Modern Estimates

Olivier Marchal et al.

Summary: The majority of deglacial data appear consistent with present-day ventilation rates, but 20% to 32% of the residuals exceed the published errors in the fossil data. Residuals below 4000 m in the western North Atlantic are all negative, indicating that deglacial Delta C-14 values from this region are too low to be explained by modern ventilation.

Revisiting the Ocean's Nonisostatic Response to 5-Day Atmospheric Loading: New Results Based on Global Bottom Pressure Records and Numerical Modeling

Richard E. Thomson et al.

Summary: The study examines the non-isostatic response of the World Ocean to surface air pressure forcing within the 4-6-day band using bottom pressure records from 59 sites of the global tsunami warning system. Numerical simulations show a pronounced dynamic response of the World Ocean to nonstationary air pressure fields, closely resembling the theoretical Rossby-Haurwitz air pressure mode. Both analytical and observational versions of air pressure loading accurately reproduce the seafloor pressure records in the Pacific, Atlantic, and Indian Oceans.

Observation-based early-warning signals for a collapse of the Atlantic Meridional Overturning Circulation

Niklas Boers

Summary: The Atlantic Meridional Overturning Circulation (AMOC) has gradually weakened in recent decades, potentially approaching a critical transition point that could have significant impacts on the global climate system. This study introduces an observation-based early-warning system for such transitions, highlighting the importance of monitoring the AMOC for potential changes in its operation mode.
