Stanene-Based Nanosheets for β-Elemene Delivery and Ultrasound-Mediated Combination Cancer Therapy

Wei Chen et al.

Summary: This study utilized a liquid-phase exfoliation strategy to obtain a new type of two-dimensional stanene-based nanosheets with a narrower band gap, allowing more efficient generation of reactive oxygen species (ROS) through ultrasound-triggered separation of electron-hole pairs. Additionally, these nanosheets showed potential for near-infrared-mediated photothermal therapy (PTT) and as nanocarriers for anticancer drug delivery. This research provides general nanoplatforms for SDT-enhanced combination cancer therapy and highlights the utility of 2D stanene nanosheets in the field of nanomedicine.

Advances and perspectives in organic sonosensitizers for sonodynamic therapy

Xuejian Xing et al.

Summary: Sonodynamic therapy (SDT) is a promising minimally invasive approach for deep tumor treatment by combining low-intensity ultrasound (US) and a chemical sonosensitizer. Organic sonosensitizers have advantages like defined chemical structure and high ROS generation, but they often face challenges such as poor water solubility and low tumor targeting capacity. Strategies to improve these issues and combine SDT with other cancer treatments are discussed in this review.

Global cancer statistics 2020: GLOBOCAN estimates of incidence and mortality worldwide for 36 cancers in 185 countries

Hyuna Sung et al.

Summary: The global cancer burden in 2020 saw an estimated 19.3 million new cancer cases and almost 10.0 million cancer deaths. Female breast cancer surpassed lung cancer as the most commonly diagnosed cancer, while lung cancer remained the leading cause of cancer death. These trends are expected to rise in 2040, with transitioning countries experiencing a larger increase compared to transitioned countries due to demographic changes and risk factors associated with globalization and a growing economy. Efforts to improve cancer prevention measures and provision of cancer care in transitioning countries will be crucial for global cancer control.

Water-Soluble Iridic-Porphyrin Complex for Non-invasive Sonodynamic and Sono-oxidation Therapy of Deep Tumors

Jiaen Xie et al.

Summary: A novel water-soluble iridium(III)-porphyrin sonosensitizer (IrTMPPS) was synthesized for sonodynamic therapy (SDT), showing enhanced SDT efficiency by sonocatalytically oxidizing intracellular NADH and exhibiting strong sonocytotoxicity towards cancer cells. In vivo experiments demonstrated effective tumor inhibition and anti-metastasis to the lungs in the presence of IrTMPPS and US irradiation, suggesting the potential of metal-based sonosensitizers for non-invasive deep tumor therapy.
