Association between statin use and the risks of glaucoma in Australia: a 10-year cohort study

Yixiong Yuan et al.

Summary: In a 10-year longitudinal study, researchers investigated the relationship between statin use and the onset of glaucoma. They found that long-term statin use was associated with a higher risk of glaucoma onset, particularly in users of rosuvastatin.

Cholesterol homeostasis regulated by ABCA1 is critical for retinal ganglion cell survival

Jialiang Yang et al.

Summary: This study reveals that lower ABCA1 expression and lower HDL are risk factors for primary open-angle glaucoma (POAG). Ablation of Abca1 in mice leads to elevated cholesterol levels in the retina, causing a POAG-like phenotype. Treatment with atorvastatin reduces cholesterol levels in the retina, improving metabolism and protecting retinal ganglion cells.

Plasma metabolite profile for primary open-angle glaucoma in three US cohorts and the UK Biobank

Oana A. Zeleznik et al.

Summary: Glaucoma is a leading cause of irreversible blindness worldwide, but its etiology is poorly understood. This study aimed to identify plasma metabolites associated with the risk of primary open-angle glaucoma (POAG) using case-control studies and cross-sectional studies. The results showed that higher levels of diglycerides and triglycerides were adversely associated with glaucoma, indicating their important role in glaucoma pathogenesis.

The Association between Serum Lipids and Intraocular Pressure in 2 Large United Kingdom Cohorts

Kian M. Madjedi et al.

Summary: The study found that serum levels of total cholesterol, high-density lipoprotein cholesterol, and low-density lipoprotein cholesterol are positively associated with intraocular pressure, while triglyceride levels may be negatively associated.

High-Density Lipoprotein 3 Cholesterol and Primary Open-Angle Glaucoma Metabolomics and Mendelian Randomization Analyses

Simon Nusinovici et al.

Summary: This study investigated the associations between blood levels of lipoprotein particles and lipid sub-fractions with POAG. The results showed a direct association between total HDL3 cholesterol and POAG, suggesting a potential causal relationship. Dysregulation of cholesterol transport may play a role in the pathogenesis of POAG.

Associations of statin use with the onset and progression of open-angle glaucoma: A systematic review and meta-analysis

Yixiong Yuan et al.

Summary: This study found that the use of statins is associated with a slightly lower risk of onset of open-angle glaucoma (OAG) based on existing evidence, but the relationship between statin use and progression of OAG remains inconclusive. The analysis included 515,788 participants from ten studies for OAG onset and 26,347 OAG patients from seven studies for OAG progression.

Metabolic biomarker profiling for identification of susceptibility to severe pneumonia and COVID-19 in the general population

Heli Julkunen et al.

Summary: Metabolic biomarkers are associated with susceptibility to severe COVID-19 and pneumonia, with both short-term and long-term risks being equally significant. Elevated levels of metabolic biomarkers may indicate higher risk of developing severe pneumonia within the first few years after measurement. These findings suggest that metabolic biomarker profiling could be a valuable tool in identifying individuals at high risk for severe infections.

Renal function and lipid metabolism are major predictors of circumpapillary retinal nerve fiber layer thickness-the LIFE-Adult Study

Franziska G. Rauscher et al.

Summary: In a large population-based study, markers of renal function and lipid metabolism were found to be predictors of sectoral cpRNFLT, showing significant associations independently of other established covariates. In contrast, factors such as markers of inflammation, glucose homeostasis, liver function, blood pressure, or obesity did not show significant associations with cpRNFLT.
