Dewetting Effects in Poly(vinylidene fluoride-trifluoroethylene) Thin Films on Poly(3-hexylthiophene) Substrates

Jing Cui et al.

Summary: Bilayers of ferroelectric polymers (PVDF-TrFE) on P3HT substrates were prepared and the formation of holes and continuous layers was observed. The surface tension of the different P3HT substrates was obtained through contact angle measurements. The study provides understanding on the mechanism of stable film formation and effective tools to control the formation of holes in functional polymer bilayers, which is important in the fabrication of organic thin film-based devices.

Ferroelectric Polymer Drives Performance Enhancement of Non-fullerene Organic Solar Cells

Jiawei Deng et al.

Summary: In this study, the performance of non-fullerene organic solar cells was enhanced by introducing a cheap ferroelectric polymer as an additive. The built-in electric field was boosted by the additional and permanent electrical field generated by the polarization of the ferroelectric dipoles. This led to improved exciton separation, accelerated charge transport, reduced charge recombination, and optimized film morphology in the devices, resulting in significantly improved efficiency.

Summary: In this study, nanopatterning of different aromatic polymer substrates using KrF excimer laser treatment was reported. The conditions for constructing the laser-induced periodic surface structures (LIPSS) pattern were established, and the surface morphology, cell compatibility and elemental concentration of the treated samples were investigated. The results confirmed the significant cell guidance ability of LIPSS pattern on some of the studied samples, providing insights for novel applications of nanopatterned polymers in tissue engineering, cell analysis, and sensor construction.

Physicochemical Modifications on Thin Films of Poly(Ethylene Terephthalate) and Its Nanocomposite with Expanded Graphite Nanostructured by Ultraviolet and Infrared Femtosecond Laser Irradiation

Rene Rodriguez-Beltran et al.

Summary: In this study, the formation of laser-induced periodic surface structures (LIPSS) on thin films of poly(ethylene terephthalate) (PET) and PET reinforced with expanded graphite (EG) was investigated. Both ultraviolet and near-infrared femtosecond laser pulses were used, and LIPSS were observed on the surfaces of both materials. The period of LIPSS was close to the irradiation wavelength and parallel to the polarization of the laser beam. The physicochemical properties of the surfaces were modified after irradiation, with changes in contact angle, surface free energy components, and adhesion. Nanomechanical properties were also measured, showing an increase in elastic modulus after LIPSS formation.

Vaclav Prajzler et al.

Summary: The study fabricated UV-curable inorganic-organic hybrid polymer multimode optical channel waveguides through roll-to-plate (R2P) nanoimprinting, and found that the lowest optical losses were measured at 850 nm with a value of 0.19 dB/cm. The research demonstrated that nanoimprinting has great potential for optical polymer waveguides, not only for optical interconnection applications, but also for other applications.

Oxidation ruled transition from normal to anomalous periodic structures with femtosecond laser irradiation on Cr/Si films

Hongbo Xie et al.

Summary: In this study, a transition from normal to anomalous morphology in periodic surface structures was demonstrated by femtosecond laser irradiation on 50-nm thick Cr/Si films in an air pressure-tunable chamber. The structure evolution from anomalously oriented subwavelength to normally oriented deep-subwavelength LIPSSs was triggered by a reduction in surface oxide induced by preceding laser pulses as the air pressure decreased. This intriguing structure transition was explained by the competitive excitation between the transverse-electric scattered surface wave and transverse-magnetic hybrid plasmon wave, which was determined by the thickness of the preformed oxide layer.
