Retrieval and validation of cloud condensation nuclei from satellite and airborne measurements over the Indian Monsoon region

A. Aravindhavel et al.

Summary: The estimation of cloud condensation nuclei (CCN) concentration is crucial for aerosol-cloud interaction (ACI) studies. However, acquiring long-term CCN measurements is challenging, leading to the use of aerosol optical properties as proxies of CCN. In this study, we used CALIPSO data and an algorithm called OMCAM to estimate height-resolved CCN and validated it with in-situ CCN measurements from CAIPEEX. Results showed a reasonable agreement but also an overestimation of N-CCN by CALIPSO.

Assessing effective radiative forcing from aerosol-cloud interactions over the global ocean

Casey J. Wall et al.

Summary: This study quantifies the relationship between anthropogenic sulfate aerosols and low-level clouds using satellite observations, and estimates the range of equilibrium climate sensitivity (ECS) by constraining the associated radiative forcing. The results indicate that the uncertainty in aerosol forcing is smaller and ECS may be larger than previously assessed.

Machine learning reveals climate forcing from aerosols is dominated by increased cloud cover

Ying Chen et al.

Summary: Satellite-based machine-learning analysis suggests that the impact of aerosols on climate is mainly due to changes in cloud cover, rather than changes in cloud brightness. These results provide important observational constraints on the cooling impact of aerosols.

Vertical profiles of cloud condensation nuclei number concentration and its empirical estimate from aerosol optical properties over the North China Plain

Rui Zhang et al.

Summary: This study investigates the characteristics of aerosol activation ability and optical properties over the North China Plain. The results show that the aerosol activation ability is influenced by air mass sources, temperature structure, anthropogenic emissions, and terrain distribution. Aerosols have a stronger activation ability in southeasterly air masses and in the free atmosphere. The aerosol scattering properties are mainly influenced by primary emissions near the surface and long-distance transport in the free troposphere. A parameterization method based on aerosol optical properties can effectively estimate the aerosol activation number concentration.

Retrieving instantaneous extinction of aerosol undetected by the CALIPSO layer detection algorithm

Feiyue Mao et al.

Summary: This study focuses on retrieving and verifying the extinction of undetected faint aerosol on a global scale using the CALIPSO layer detection algorithm. The results show good agreement with independent observations during night-time, but a positive bias and low agreement during daytime. This research is important for improving our understanding of aerosol variations and quantifying their impacts on global climate change.

Evaluation of aerosol number concentrations from CALIPSO with ATom airborne in situ measurements

Goutam Choudhury et al.

Summary: The study evaluates the available aerosol number concentration retrieval algorithms for the CALIPSO satellite's CALIOP instrument by comparing it with airborne in situ measurements. The POLIPHON and OMCAM algorithms show good agreement with the in situ measurements, with slight modifications needed for the OMCAM algorithm for marine-dominated cases. The findings support the use of CALIOP in studying aerosol-cloud interactions.

Estimating cloud condensation nuclei concentrations from CALIPSO lidar measurements

Goutam Choudhury et al.

Summary: We present a novel methodology to estimate cloud condensation nuclei (CCN) concentrations from spaceborne lidar measurements. The algorithm incorporates various observations and models to estimate aerosol number concentration and calculate CCN concentrations at different supersaturations. The results show that the algorithm has an uncertainty range of 2 to 3 and demonstrates good calculation accuracy.

Ambient aerosol properties in the remote atmosphere from global-scale in situ measurements

Charles A. Brock et al.

Summary: In situ measurements of aerosol microphysical, chemical, and optical properties were conducted during global-scale flights from 2016-2018 as part of the Atmospheric Tomography Mission (ATom). The data obtained were used to estimate aerosol hygroscopicity, size distributions, and other intensive and extensive aerosol properties, providing valuable insights into atmospheric aerosols and their behavior. By comparing different measurements and calculations, the study showed no substantial bias in the results, demonstrating the reliability and accuracy of the methodology.

Southern Ocean latitudinal gradients of cloud condensation nuclei

Ruhi S. Humphries et al.

Summary: The Southern Ocean region exhibits unique atmospheric characteristics and aerosol compositions, with distinct influences in the northern, mid-latitude, and southern sectors. The northern sector shows higher aerosol concentrations, the mid-latitudes display a mixture of biogenic and sea-salt aerosols, while the southern sector primarily consists of biologically derived sulfur species aerosols. Further long-term measurements are needed to comprehensively understand the aerosol processes across different latitudes and seasons in the Southern Ocean region.
