Simulating the pyrolysis interactions among hemicellulose, cellulose and lignin in wood waste under real conditions to find the proper way to prepare bio-oil

Ce Sun et al.

Summary: The distribution of cellulose, hemicellulose, and lignin in the biomass structure was uneven. Chemical methods were used to remove them and explore their interactions during pyrolysis. The pyrolysis behavior of the remaining substances after hemicellulose removal was studied in depth, showing that it was more beneficial to the preparation of high-quality bio-oil.

Analysis on common problems of the wastewater treatment industry in urban China

Jingbing Zhang et al.

Summary: The wastewater treatment industry in urban China faces common problems such as insufficient drainage network length and low water quality ratio. There is also a gap in construction of wastewater treatment facilities compared to developed countries. This study investigates the common problems that hinder the operation efficiency of wastewater treatment plants and proposes three countermeasures, including refinement design, optimization facilities, and reasonable process control.

Effects of lipids on sludge and chlorella protein pyrolysis by thermogravimetry Fourier transform infrared spectrometry

Deyong Che et al.

Summary: Biomass pyrolysis has been hindered by the formation of NOx precursors, mainly from protein pyrolysis. The effect of lipids on this process is unclear. In this study, proteins and lipids were extracted from chlorella and sewage sludge to investigate their thermal decomposition characteristics, thermodynamic properties, kinetic parameters, and reaction mechanisms. The results showed that lipids restrict the pyrolysis of sludge protein, while there was no significant difference in the pyrolysis of chlorella protein with or without lipids.

Comparison between hydrogen-rich biogas production from conventional pyrolysis and microwave pyrolysis of sewage sludge: is microwave pyrolysis always better in the whole temperature range?

Yanting Liu et al.

Summary: The study investigated the influence of pyrolysis temperature on biogas production from sewage sludge using conventional pyrolysis and microwave pyrolysis. Results showed that with increasing temperature, the product yields varied significantly for conventional pyrolysis, while the changes were minimal for microwave pyrolysis. Microwave pyrolysis resulted in more hydrogen atoms converting into tar instead of being released into biogas, indicating the enhancement of hydrogen transfer reactions at higher temperatures.

Flash Pyrolysis Kinetics of Extracted Lignocellulosic Biomass Components

Stefan Pielsticker et al.

Summary: This study experimentally investigated the pyrolysis kinetics of cellulose, hemicellulose, and lignin, identifying different reaction regimes and activation energies. The SFOR and 2-step models were calibrated for all three components, with satisfying results obtained for lignin using the 2-step model. Modifications to the SFOR model were found promising for describing flash pyrolysis behavior, which will be further studied in the future.

Pyrolysis characteristic and kinetic analysis of sewage sludge using model-free and master plots methods

Huidong Liu et al.

Summary: The pyrolysis kinetics of municipal sludge and pharmaceutical sludge were studied using thermogravimetry, revealing different activation energies and mechanisms. The thermal decomposition was divided into three stages, with different models better explaining the pyrolysis mechanism for each type of sludge. The study also showed that organic matter in sewage sludge can be decomposed into bio-oil and bio-gas at elevated temperatures, making it a promising energy source.

Independent parallel pyrolysis kinetics of extracted proteins and lipids as well as model carbohydrates in microalgae

Ria Aniza et al.

Summary: Microalgae have unique potentials for various applications, including biofuel production, wastewater treatment, and animal and aquaculture feed production. The study found that lipid and carbohydrates from microalgae are suitable feedstocks for liquid and solid biofuel production, while protein is not suitable. The study also developed a method to predict the kinetics parameters of the three constituents of microalgae.

Effect of wet torrefaction on pyrolysis kinetics and conversion of microalgae carbohydrates, proteins, and lipids

Yong Yang Gan et al.

Summary: The experimental results of microalgae pyrolysis kinetics are crucial for reactor design in the biomass-to-energy process. Utilizing the independent parallel reaction model, the pyrolysis kinetics of microalgae components pretreated by wet torrefaction were evaluated. The study found that the pyrolysis kinetics of microalgae ESP-31 and FSP-E showed different characteristics, with both species predicted to have a fit quality of at least 97%, indicating the significant impact of low-temperature wet torrefaction on the kinetic parameters of microalgae ESP-31 compared to FSP-E.

Summary: The study investigated the co-pyrolysis characteristics of sewage sludge and peanut shell under nitrogen atmosphere, using thermogravimetric - Fourier transform infrared spectrometry and artificial neural network. The experiments revealed a synergistic effect between sewage sludge and peanut shell, with shared gases and functional groups. The activation energy E was calculated using two non-isothermal kinetic analysis methods, and the best ANN model (ANN21) for predicting pyrolysis was identified.
