Species distribution models as a tool for early detection of the invasive Raphidiopsis raciborskii in European lakes

Carlotta Meriggi et al.

Summary: In freshwater habitats, invasive species and the increase of cyanobacterial blooms are causing biodiversity loss. Raphidiopsis raciborskii, a toxin-producing cyanobacteria species, is expanding its range across Europe. By using species distribution models and bioclimatic environmental variables, suitable areas for colonization and survival of R. raciborskii, especially in Northern Europe, were identified. This study provides valuable information for monitoring and prevention efforts to control the spread of R. raciborskii.

Precision early detection of invasive and toxic cyanobacteria: A case study of Raphidiopsis raciborskii

Fengjiao Tan et al.

Summary: A duplex digital PCR monitoring approach was developed and validated for the detection of the abundance and toxin-producing potential of the toxic cyanobacterium, Raphidiopsis raciborskii. This method showed higher precision compared to traditional methods at low cell concentration and had the highest detection rate in over two hundred environmental samples.
