An Adventure into the World of Soft Matter

Dominique Langevin

Summary: Soft matter is a field of condensed matter physics that started developing in France in the 1970s under the influence of Pierre-Gilles de Gennes. The author played a role in this development and shares some memorable events in this article. Soft matter is a multidisciplinary field connected to physics, chemistry, and biology, and working in this area is stimulating. The author's research focuses on liquid surfaces, which have gained importance with the advent of miniaturization. The author benefited from the French and European network systems, as well as collaborations with young students and industrial partners, which contributed to their research successes.

Novel glass capillary microfluidic devices for the flexible and simple production of multi-cored double emulsions

Nico Leister et al.

Summary: This study developed a new device to produce double emulsion droplets with several hundred monodispersed inner droplets using a two-step jet break-up within coaxial capillaries. Monodispersed multicompartment microcapsules were successfully obtained by adjusting the materials and process parameters.

Industrial block copolymer surfactants: Diversity of associative forms and interaction with carbon nanomaterial

Olga S. Zueva et al.

Summary: In this study, the self-association/micellization of block copolymers based on PEO and PPO blocks in aqueous solutions and dispersions of multi-walled carbon nanotubes (MWCNTs) was investigated. NMR experiments, including self-diffusion measurements and spectral analysis, were conducted to study this process. The results showed that there was no well-defined critical micelle concentration, and the size of micelles formed by the copolymers remained constant. It was also observed that the shape and hydrodynamic size of micelles changed with increasing polymer concentration. A double-stage nature of copolymer molecules association/micellization was proposed. Interaction peculiarities between various associates of different block copolymers and MWCNTs were discussed. The study also revealed different adsorption mechanisms of poloxamers and diproxamine on the surface of MWCNTs. Transmission electron microscopy was used to explore the variety of associative forms of the block copolymers.

Structural characterization using SAXS and rheological behaviors of pluronic F127 and methylcellulose blends

Onpreeya Boonrat et al.

Summary: A new thermosensitive matrix was generated by blending PF with MC, which enabled gel formation upon heating and lowered the gelation temperature of PF. The SAXS curves showed changes in the ordered structure at high temperatures, suggesting the formation of a network by MC at high temperatures. Incorporation of etidronate sodium did not affect the gelation and ordered structure of the polymeric systems.
