Understanding the effect of microstructural texture on the anisotropic elastic properties of selective laser melted Ti-24Nb-4Zr-8Sn

Vivien J. Challis et al.

Summary: Due to their low Young's Modulus, high strength and suitability for additive manufacturing, non-toxic beta-type titanium alloys are emerging as next-generation biomaterials. We present novel experimental results that demonstrate significant variation of Young's Modulus with direction for selective laser melted (SLM) biocompatible Ti-24Nb-4Zr-8Sn (Ti2448). Computational models accurately predict the anisotropic Young's Modulus of polycrystalline materials and show how to tailor the modulus of SLM components by choosing the build orientation in the context of biocompatible Ti2448.

Effects of heat treatment on microstructure and mechanical properties of selective laser melted Ti-6Al-4V lattice materials

Nan Jin et al.

Summary: The study investigates the relationship between microstructure and mechanical properties of titanium lattice materials fabricated by selective laser melting (SLM) with different heat treatments. The results show that the bending-dominated structure BCC is more sensitive to heat treatment conditions, with the optimal temperatures being 920 degrees C for BCC and 750 degrees C for FCC. A numerical simulation model was also established to depict the relationship between the mechanical properties of the base material and the lattice materials.

Realizing superior ductility of selective laser melted Ti-6Al-4V through a multi-step heat treatment

Cheng-Lin Li et al.

Summary: The study found that a single-step annealing process can change the martensitic structure to a fine lamellar α + β structure, providing a Ti-6Al-4V alloy with high strength and ductility. In contrast, the multi-step heat treatment process facilitates the globularization of the α phase, creating an almost equiaxed structure with superior ductility while maintaining a moderate ultimate tensile strength.

Resolving the porosity-unmelted inclusion dilemma during in-situ alloying of Ti34Nb via laser powder bed fusion

Sheng Huang et al.

Summary: This study investigated the influence of laser power, velocity, and profile on the porosity, inclusion content, and microstructural evolution of in-situ alloyed laser powder bed fusion manufactured Ti34Nb. It found that a specific combination of laser profile, power, velocity, and scanning strategy could result in the formation of an ideal microstructure.

The influence of zirconium content on the microstructure, mechanical properties, and biocompatibility of in-situ alloying Ti-Nb-Ta based β alloys processed by selective laser melting

Weihuan Kong et al.

Summary: This study investigates Ti-Nb-Ta based beta alloys with different zirconium additions manufactured by SLM, showing that zirconium additions can increase Vickers hardness and UTS due to beta grain refinement caused by higher degree of undercooling. Additionally, corrosion ions released from immersion testing were found to be extremely small, indicating good biocompatibility of these alloys.
