Supporting Trimetallic Metal-Organic Frameworks on S/N-Doped Carbon Macroporous Fibers for Highly Efficient Electrocatalytic Oxygen Evolution

Yafei Zhao et al.

Summary: In this study, a promising oxygen evolution reaction (OER) electrocatalyst, S/N-CMF@FexCoyNi1-x-y-MOF, was delicately fabricated via a cation-exchange strategy, which exhibited outstanding activity and stability in alkaline OER. The outstanding performance of the electrocatalyst was attributed to the trimetallic composition, hollow S/N-CMF matrix facilitating exposure of active sites, and the post-formed Fe/Co-doped gamma-NiOOH during the OER operation.

Supported Ruthenium Single-Atom and Clustered Catalysts Outperform Benchmark Pt for Alkaline Hydrogen Evolution

Yanping Zhu et al.

Summary: Ensuring both satisfactory catalytic behavior and high metal utilization is a challenge when designing noble-metal-based catalysts for electrochemical reactions. This study demonstrates that well-dispersed ruthenium (Ru) based clusters with adjacent Ru single atoms (SAs) on layered sodium cobalt oxide (Ru/NC) exhibit superb electrocatalytic activity for alkaline HER. The Ru/NC catalyst shows a two-fold increase in activity compared to commercial Pt/C. Operando characterizations combined with DFT simulations reveal the origin of the superior activity and establish a structure-performance relationship, highlighting the dominant role of Ru clusters in HER activity.

Metal and Metal Oxide Supported on Ordered Mesoporous Carbon as Heterogeneous Catalysts

Meiqi Gao et al.

Summary: The evolution of model catalyst systems has progressed from single-crystal surfaces to two-dimensional and three-dimensional systems, mimicking the properties of nanoparticles in industrial catalysts. Ordered mesoporous carbon (OMC) materials have unique structures that enable Knudsen diffusion, metal dispersion, and metal embedment, and play important roles in catalysis and other applications. This review provides an introduction to the synthesis routes of OMC-supported metal or metal oxide catalysts and systematically summarizes the mass transfer, reactant chemisorption, discrimination of active species, and catalytic reaction mechanism of these catalysts, with a focus on the advantages of catalysis occurring inside mesopores. Understanding these factors helps in controlling catalytic reactions and designing long-lasting industrial catalysts.

Coupling interface engineering with electronic interaction toward high-efficiency H2 evolution in pH-universal electrolytes

Jinli Chen et al.

Summary: The PtCoW@CeO2 heterojunction catalyst is designed and prepared using the merits of heterojunction, CeO2, and W, which exhibits efficient hydrogen evolution reaction (HER) performance in pH-universal conditions by accelerating water dissociation and improving the desorption of OHad. Density functional theory calculation shows that the electronic structure of Pt is regulated by CeO2 and W, which enhances the Pt-Had bond strength for boosting HER intrinsic activity. Electrochemical results demonstrate its stability and low potentials in alkaline, neutral, and acidic solutions, with -26, -25, and -23 mV at -10 mA cm -2, respectively, and the catalyst can stably cycle for 50,000 cycles. This work provides guidance for developing high-performance Pt-based catalysts in pH-universal environments.

Electronic Structure Engineering of Single-Atom Ru Sites via Co-N4 Sites for Bifunctional pH-Universal Water Splitting

Chengli Rong et al.

Summary: The development of bifunctional water-splitting electrocatalysts that are efficient and stable over a wide range of pH is crucial but challenging. This study reports an atomically dispersed Ru/Co dual-sites catalyst anchored on N-doped carbon (Ru/Co-N-C) for excellent oxygen evolution reaction (OER) and hydrogen evolution reaction (HER) in both acidic and alkaline electrolytes. The catalyst shows superior performance compared to benchmark catalysts Pt/C and RuO2, with low overpotentials and high current densities. Theoretical calculations and experimental results demonstrate that the introduction of Co-N4 sites into Ru/Co-N-C modifies the electronic structure of Ru and enhances the bonding strength with oxygen/hydrogen intermediate species, leading to improved OER and HER performance. Furthermore, the incorporation of Co-N4 sites improves the corrosion-resistance of Ru/Co-N-C during electrolysis. The Ru/Co-N-C catalyst has been successfully applied in a proton exchange membrane water electrolyzer and shows stable operation at a high current density.
