Galectin-1 and-3 in high amounts inhibit angiogenic properties of human retinal microvascular endothelial cells in vitro

Anna Hillenmayer et al.

Summary: This study found that hr-GAL1 and 3 can inhibit the proliferation, migration, and apoptosis of human retinal microvascular endothelial cells, and have inhibitory effects on angiogenesis. However, hr-GAL1 and 3 do not show toxic effects on HRMEC. In addition, hr-GAL1 and 3 treatment can activate the proangiogenic Wnt/β-catenin signaling pathway.

Effects of the Calix[4]arene Derivative Compound OTX008 on High Glucose-Stimulated ARPE-19 Cells: Focus on Galectin-1/TGF-β/EMT Pathway

Maria Consiglia Trotta et al.

Summary: Inhibition of galectin-1 can improve cell viability, reduce fibrotic protein expression, and decrease ROS content and epithelial-mesenchymal transition in high glucose conditions. This suggests that preserving retinal pigment epithelial cell integrity and functionality can be achieved by inhibiting galectin-1 in diabetic retinopathy.

Galectin-1 deletion in mice causes bone loss via impaired osteogenic differentiation potential of BMSCs

Yu Chen et al.

Summary: Bone formation depends on osteoblasts derived from BMSCs. Gal-1 plays a crucial role in immunomodulation and has been shown to promote osteogenic differentiation of BMSCs through the activation of Lrp5 expression and Wnt/beta-catenin signaling pathway. Age-related decline in Gal-1 expression in aged mice is associated with attenuated osteogenic differentiation potential of BMSCs.

Tissue-specific control of galectin-1-driven circuits during inflammatory responses

Anabela M. Cutine et al.

Summary: The importance of glycan-binding proteins, especially galectins, in immune tolerance and inflammation has been well established. Galectin-1, as a prototype member of this protein family, displays mainly anti-inflammatory and immunosuppressive activities but may also have pro-inflammatory effects under certain circumstances. Further studies on the regulation and function of galectins in different tissue microenvironments could lead to tailored therapeutic strategies for pathological inflammatory conditions.
